Holy Grail beats it when it comes to pure laughs, but Life or Brian is also a remarkably strong satire. "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" might be the Pythons' single finest moment.

Gather around as I explain comedy, the most subjective of all. You might hoot, you might holler, you might smirk, you might bellow , you might titter, but baby if you don’t even kinda smirk you’re a dumb stupid nitwit OI BLOODY HELL Terry Jones has instilled in me a lifetime of apprehension approaching British women.

Certainly one of the funniest films I've ever seen. While the quality of the film feels more like made-for-TV than epic film like other Monty Python bits it adds to it's charm. It's historically accurate in a sense as much as it serves as a source of humour on how ridiculous things were back then (and today). Bloody hilarious and well worth seeing if you can keep an open mind about the subject matter, after all there is a kind of hidden disclaimer in the first few minutes.

It contains some of the most intelligent and insightful humour of Monty Python's career, and it has the most coherent plot and story, but it also falls into the recurrent Monty Python bad habits of racism, ableism and transphobia. I mean, this movie came out only a few month before the 1980s and it still literally has a man in Black Face at one point. Like most Flying Circus sketches, it would much funnier it wasn't so offensive and had such dated values.

Brilliant, as you ought to expect from Monty Python. A wicked send-up of Christianity, and religion in general, that manages to be dangerously provocative by actually getting the viewer to *think* instead of just being blindly insulting; all the while being hilarious and entertaining. A classic.

This was the last of the main three MP films for me, and The Holy Grail remains at the top. The stoning scene was easily the funniest for me, followed by Biggus Dickus. Outside of that, a lot of the jokes went on far longer than they needed to, and since the story and characters are nearly nonexistent, it heavily relies on the humor to be consistent. Hardcore MP fans will surely love it, but I think it’s better to watch its best clips, which luckily hold up to their better sketches.

While not quite the masterpiece that is Holy Grail, Life of Brian benefits from incisive religious satire, individual jokes that are gut-busting and better than Holy Grail in their way, and an overall sense of farce about the proceedings. By contrast, it's more uneven, and some jokes don't quite land but also don't outstay their welcome. Altogether, a worthy sophomore cinematic effort that doesn't quite match its predecessor.

Probably my least favorite of the Pythons. While it is sometimes incredibly funny and clever, it punches down a lot -too much- to the point of being reactionary (transphobia, racism, colonialism, ableism...). I prefer them when they punch up or when they go full absurd.

Fans of Monty Python debate over weather this movie or "Holy Grail" is better, however most of them generally agree on them being two of the funniest movies ever. The satire in this film is possibly the group's sharpest. However, the laughs are more subdued than the ones allowed by the relentless silliness of "Holy Grail"

Lacks the consistently excellent pacing and humor of THG [I'd say THG has really only two weak parts in the whole film], but individual moments, e.g. the spectacularly twisted 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,' are fantastic. Graham Chapman's Brian is also beautifully earnest, and gives LoB a more character-based vitality that is unique among Python stuff-- "Life's a piece of shit / When you look at it."

It seems a lot of the time this film can't get its humour beyond placing modern life-isms in this old Biblical setting, but there are still a number of good jokes (especially the sequence when Brian falls off the tower, and the crucifixion guards) and it's a fun, easy watch.

Python's second masterpiece is not only teeming with iconic, hilarious scenes but is also a very witty depiction and exploration of human behaviours and psychological traits that remain topical to this day, from messianism, zealotry, subservience and conformism to selfishness, hypocrisy, pettiness and opportunism. Ultimately, it's a film advocating independent thinking, undercutting and renouncing the doom and gloom of Christianity and ending with the most legendary optimistic song of all time.

I hate to say it, but this really doesn't hold a candle to Holy Grail, at least in terms of chuckles per minute. There's a lot of parts that fall kinda flat and some even seem to drag on. I found myself anticipating certain scenes and then being slightly disappointed when they weren't as laughtastic as I'd remembered. Still, it's better than most comedies, and it looks great (especially in hi-def). And you have to admire the intelligence and audacity of it.

When compared to current comedies, "Life of Brian" and Monty Python as a whole are decidedly more tame. I recognize it as a classic that has been the inspiration for a lot to come and that it was plenty controversial when it came out. With that said, it just isn't as funny nowadays. The mother being played by one of the chaps was annoying as fudge to me, souring a lot of the experience. It is also the case that the filmmaking is... unruly for most the time. That isn't to say that parts of it still works wonders. It did make me mourn that not more high-concept comedies like it are being made.

Life of Brian manages to be both hilarious and poignant. It's offensive only to the blindly devotional, never ridiculing Christianity as a whole, but only the aspects that they find ridiculous or problematic. The "follow the shoe!" scene is a prime example of this, and possibly my favorite scene in the movie. The ending song is also fantastic. To me it felt like a summary of the Pythons' attitude: don't take stuff so seriously, just dance and laugh and whistle through life!

Life of Brian isn't exactly very subtle when it comes to its message. But then again, it isn't trying to be subtle either, it's trying to be Monty Python doing Monty Python things to the origins of Christianity. So it's a silly take on Jesus done in only a way these guys can do it. Not quite on the level of The Holy Grail but still hilarious in its own right.
