Marey devised a “chronophotographic gun” similar in principle to Janssen's revolver, but far more compact, to pursue a study of motion somewhat related to what Muybridge was doing. For this study, a man passed by the camera with bright white markings on his clothes; the photos were then traced to create the images seen here. This use of reference points to abstract and trace movement essentially marks the birth of motion capture, "mocap suit" and all, cannily enough.
