Jessica has just been released from a mental hospital. Wanting to "start over", she moves into an old New England farmhouse with her husband and a friend. Before they even arrive Jess starts having strange encounters, and after they find a young transient in their new home, things start getting rather nasty. Seems this redheaded hippie chick is in fact a vampire... (imdb)

There's a decent film in here about mental illness, featuring a suitably fragile performance by the nicely-cast Lampert. There's also a reasonably effective chiller, again with Lampert playing the victim quite effectively. While it doesn't quite fit together well enough, there is an overall uneasy and creepy feel to the piece that holds the attention - the somewhat playful direction and weird electro score help this along. Amateurish but competent, and perhaps underappreciated.

Major spooky fall vibes bolstered by a great score and a convincingly neurotic performance by the lead.

Come on, post-hippy era, green wavers vs townsfolk, the metaphor is RIGHT THERE. It looks very good, and it hacks its own trail, but in the end it comes across a bit too much like a psychological horror movie that doesn't give its characters a psyche to ologize.

Belongs to that class of 70's movies that are part horror, part mystery, and part something else. Films like Images, Martin, Don't Look Now, and The Tenant that are ambiguous about reality, and are primarily about setting mood. This one isn't that great though. I liked it at first but after a while my interest waned. The poor acting didn't help. It almost succeeds in creating a creepy atmosphere (nice use of music and sound design), but shoots itself in the foot with a silly climax.

The title is confusing. Who is speaking? And to whom? Also, it's rare for a film to have the villains make a declarative statement in the title. The sound does a lot of work in this.

A cadre of poor proto-hippies drive to a possibly haunted house in a hearse, and the one who just left an asylum has a hobby of making rubbings of gravestones. Yeah, shit goes down. What it lacks in logic and amateurish form is partially redeemed by a disturbing inner monologue and a pervasive, thick dread.

...better yet, let's bore her with post-hippy rhetoric and convince her she's in an edgy psychological horror film and not an acid-tripping art house flick. I do love Gretchen Corbett though but she's wasted here and not in the same way as the rest of the cast and crew was.

reminded me of Invasion of the Body Snatchers '78 and Friday the 13th at the final but it's like an amateur film. #direnjessica

What could have been a decent early 70's horror movie ended up being a bit on the avant-garde side, but more a mish-mash of what would eventually evolve into good horror movies in the future. Looking at it in posterity is like watching a baby in a diaper crawl when all you know is a grown man walking in a suit and tie.

One of the best horror films of the '70s. Like with so many other finer efforts in this genre, the no-name cast and tiny budget actually add to the realism

I really liked this. I just feel bad for that little animal that they probably did kill for the movie.

More of a Manson Family ASMR video than a horror film. Great building of atmospheric dread.

Movie is just layered with a general sense of unease. Filled with a sense of loneliness. How lonely these spirals into madness can truly be. Shot beautifully with everything at the water looking gorgeous. Love the greyness of everything so the light blues of the clothes and eyes and the reds of clothes and hair are vibrant on screen. Definitely possible to read into this as a post 60s acid causality/MK bend as well.

There's a lot going on in this movie with sowing seeds of doubt in the mind of the main character as well as the viewers. The title of the movie is very misleading and makes you think it's maybe about some prank gone wrong, but what you get is a very smart and creepy horror movie that may or may not be about a vampire. That electronic soundtrack creates for a very oppressive mood. The story is really built upon the two female characters and the acting is strong with both of them.

I like the unease it sets up in the first half, regarding Jessica's psyche, and I also like that it doesn't delve too much into her past, or tell you too specifically what she's going through. It's a quick and effective setup for a plot involving this much paranoia and suspicion.

Immaculate in creating a certain tone and a sense of dread, Hancock's classic horror film is less about what it shows and more about a slow descent into madness. The score, in particular, serves the film incredibly well in that it forces a real sense unease. Not for everyone, but essential viewing for classic horror fans.

There goes sweet Jessica, smiling away while occupied with two favorite hobbies: making charcoal rubs of gravestones and pretending the voices in her head aren't really there. The dreamlike plot is inconclusive and slow at times, but Zohra Lampert's performance in the title role is simply remarkable, commanding your attention start to finish: she's empathetic, tragic, and - like the best leading characters of the genre - heartbreakingly, terrifyingly real.

Aside from the somewhat silly music, this is a rather ambitious attempt at creepiness. Unfortunately it's rather tame for the most part and then seems to climax prematurely with bloody images when it's only just started being really strangely ambiguous. You have to strain yourself pretty hard to feel scared by this.

Eh, not too impressed. I saw the ending coming about a mile away. Kind of a bare bones script, just going through the motions. Mariclare Costello did a very good job considering what she was given to work with, which wasn't much.
