I'm pretty sure I could watch Isabelle's dance scene every day for the next year and never get tired of it.

Mature, nuanced drama with a great performance from Binoche and an elegant, yet edgy, denouement.

Striking something close to Le Rayon vert as adapted to Jean-Jacques Beineix's aesthetic program, and there are other reference points spread about, but Denis has delivered something in a class of its own. The script shows a hyper-sensitive and inexhaustibly sympathetic intimacy with a range of people, whose deepest flaws are communicated subtly through their mannerisms, particularly in speaking. Beautiful film.

I don't know how this crap got into my Hulu watchlist. Probably because of Binoche. If I had realized that Claire Denis wrote and directed I never would have added it. I've never seen anything by her that was good. She's a hack. And most French films suck.

You know how Ruben Östlund's films are about awkward moments repeated? This is like that but with romance. Not a bad film, but not up to Denis' standards.

Pointless movie about a person who is completely lost and does not find anything. Only good thing in this one is Juliette Binoche.

in the light of barthes' book i think this film suggests two things: a freer approach to love and relationships plus something about paris being full of horrendous men

The scene where she shouts at the artists is amazing. The procession of the worst French men known to the world is also hilarious and horrifying. It really grows into something fantastic in the second half

While this unusual movie is all about romance and features many comedic moments, you wouldn't confuse it for a romantic comedy. Instead of following any conventional structure, it focuses on the many frustrations, negotiations, defeats and little victories in its heroine's search for companionship.

At its broadest, it's a movie about how confused standards and expectations can erode the spontaneity of romance, how loneliness can torture you and distract you from your own needs, but especially how, as time goes on, those feelings become more desperate and frustrating. Binoche plays with those complications on her face, and pushes the movie past the barrier of its austere script.

A true tragic comedy in the way it depicts a desperate, agonizing search for love. Each of the four lovers Isabelle finds are different and mysterious. She's an authentic artist, but suffers everytime her heart aches for someone. Bodies in motion and bright dialogues are shot with Denis' usual vibration, from close-ups to long shots. A romcom not like any other. So casual, yet so sophisticated tale about human behavior - first dialogue with the banker at a bar, At Last dance.

After showing some initial promise with the engaged dialogue and necessary close-ups, things soon get very tiresome with each scene simply a succession of arguing (petty and heated), making up, making out, and making love with our protagonist's assembly line of eligible bachelors (and married men). There's no progression in her character, who makes zero effort to fix her problems, but instead dabbles in clairvoyancy, which contributes to possibly the worst closing credits ever.

One wouldn't say this is a Denis movie by simply watching it; it's way more standard and less pensive than her others. How much one likes this probably depends a lot on how much one can stands Binoche's character desperate need for a guy.
