Les intranquilles

Understated and unsettling portrait of the corrosive nature of mental illness (and the frustrations of witnessing it in a loved one) eschews melodramatic sensationalism in favour of a slow, painful, inconclusive descent into worry and uncertainty, with a pair of fine performances from Bekhti and Bonnard the perfect guides for this story. More about (clipped) mood and emotion than anything resembling an academic portrait of Damien’s condition which does leave the film feeling detached at times.

The screenwriters are obviously confused about people suffering from bipolar condition, the condition of being an artist and loving a person although you have had enough. The simplest employment of arts and crafts duo made me sick to my stomach. All in all there was no insight about the issue.

Some good acting but the narrative is just unbearably by the numbers and derivative.
