This movie tells two stories: the birth of a novel, and the life of a couple culminating in the birth of their child. All the people the husband meets on their Breton Island get absorbed into this book, transformed and distorted. They are the pawns in a fascinating chess game on a life-sized board he plays with the forces of evil and destruction. Of course this fantastic game in which the destinies of the characters are resolved is only imaginary. Or is it? (MUBI)

Mixture of arthouse and fantasy/sci-fi is something I really love and here it works perfectly. Varda by using some strange machine to control people tells us about human relationships. In the end it feels quite simple, but what a joy to watch.

DVDRip no MakingOff.

Even by Varda's avant-garde standards, this is a particularly strange and beguiling piece. An allegory - perhaps a bit of a tedious one, especially in the first half - about creators and creations, and the machinations of fate and its practitioners, who might be either gods or monsters. How fitting that it's dedicated to Jacques Demy, who of course made his reputation on characters who live and love by the whims of circumstances beyond their control.

I enjoyed watching this film quite a bit, but I also found it to be a fairly empty experience. It's like it stirred up a bunch of themes and let them float around for a bit, but nothing really successfully landed. It doesn't feel right to call a film this engaging a "failure", but as a follow-up to "Le bonheur" ...

Ahead of it's time in many ways. Clunky and difficult at times, but never boring.
