Strong finish, but for the longest time I was trying to get the feel of this devilish romance from Marcel Carné. There is this dated (for the lack of a better word) off-beatness (which is not a word) about this, which is both it's appeal and it's downfall. Definitely didn't need to use so much time to get to the dangerous bits, but you know how the French love to talk...

Classical folk tale with some magical flourish and a couple of compelling performances. The dialogue is all sweet and swooning platitudes about the nature of love, which is very French and to which I'm not necessarily opposed, but frankly I find this film to be pretty boring.

Carné channels Cocteau in this magnificent surreal story about a pair of envoys of the devil whose task is to get a couple to fall in love with them. Everything in the film is gorgeous and the story is wonderfully done, easy to follow but complex enough to be interesting. While the film is not a comedy it has a light air and some moments with sharp wit.
