pain to watch such an adaptation with that pace and theatrical manner, if you're not a Pasolini or adapt it in modernised fashion. Btw, sure, they had servants to whiten your clothes & lots of other chemical stuff; but did they have modern medicine & shampoos to make their skin shine like health & beauty bombs? Some few lucky & noble ones of course looked so, but most not -especially if they lived close to farm animals... I want my chivalrous love tales more grotesque and hardcore!

Kept intact Rohmer's streak of great modern-set films and so-so period-set films.

strange period piece with some odd performances. fidelity dominates a lot of the discussion, and for a while, based on the way the characters were constructed, it seemed as though rohmer were siding with the pro-fidelity stance, but the film became increasingly farcical, at one point andy gillet dressing up as a shepherdess, turning everything into a pseudo-lesbian thing. really quite silly. i laughed and grimaced a lot. not sure of the score at all.

At times the plot seems to resemble an Astaire-Rogers musical, and the production seems to have consisted in spending a few days down at the park, but Rohmer has concocted a charming, fascinating and sexy movie that cannot even quite be described as a period film. From a director who was eighty-seven years old at time of release, Rohmer's final work remains more complex (yet economical), dynamic and alive than just about anything else being done at the time. He was one of the true greats.

As Astrea and Celadon talk out their heartbreak, confusion, humility and ardor, Rohmer transports us visually, sentimentally, intellectually and spiritually.

A beautifully rendered, philosophically informed love story from Rohmer. The film begins with a compelling and dramatic exchange that helps keep the film moving through some of the more philosophical dialogue later. Rohmer's film reflects deeply on the nature of true love, of union with another, and with the existence and nature of God.

Wait, it's not a comedy? Even if everything was unintentionally funny I still had a good laugh and really enjoyed it.
