Legend of the Mummy

Drawn from Stoker's novel _The Jewel of the Seven Stars_ -- previously the basis for _The Awakening_ -- this, from scare specialist Obrow, arrives as a mostly entertaining, if occasionally awkward, mix of Victorian gothic-styled dramatics and contempo Southern California characters. Light in the gore department, save for a discreetly lit dismemberment sequence and some faux nightmare tableaux, the pic compensates with effective suspense, an earnest tone, and sturdy perfs by a cast of veterans
