Horror films hadn't really been a thing since the 1930s, so it's fun to see them make a return after the ruins of World War II. The genre hasn't really refined itself yet, and that's also true with Nabeshima kaibyô-den [Legend of Ghost Cat in Nabeshima] (1949), but it does create that eerie feeling when it wants. Sure, most of the time it isn't scary, but with a cat theme, it had me glued.

I'm fascinated by the game Go and I enjoyed that it was such an important part of the story. There is a feeling of foreboding that runs throughout the film mostly due to the score but there are few actual scares.
