Ineffectual on most every level. Credit obviously goes to Hardy's duel performance, but there the plaudits for anything noteworthy stop. Helgeland's direction and screenplay are turgidly dull and his storytelling uneven; I couldn't even work out why Eccleston's character was there? The silly cartoony representation of East London not so carefully crafted by Helgeland (presumably to appeal to N.American audiences) robs the story of its authenticity, potential gravitas, humour and grimy drama.

Legend will come across as a disappointment to anyone who is expecting an exceptional gangster movie about two of London's most notorious gangsters. It's all too familiar, and all too cold, to be that. It is a generic gangster movie that is elevated by two outstanding performances by Tom Hardy, who does such a great job at playing the Kray brothers. But, beyond his outstanding performance, there's very little to differentiate Legend from a couple dozen other gangster movies.

Brilliant dual lead performance by Hardy. Wish had more Paul B. Voice-over unecessary & odd by end. Overly sympathetic portrayal of Reggie 2 highlight difference from his mentally-ill twin. In reality, they were both pieces of shit. Being somwhat less vile & hateful than Ron is hardly a high moral bar! Have to penalize film some for that. If wasn't a 'true' story & instead about fictional gangsters I'd rate it higher. Top notch supporting cast but it is obviously Hardy's show/exhibition piece.

Good performances but in a plot without much inspiration beyond ancient Greek tragedy. One surprising and innovative element is Emily Browning who as Frances and her disembodied voice, acts as the coryphaeus (leader of the chorus who can participate in the action) and narrator. Her narration is given most of the best lines.

Legend may be an inaccurate glorification of events but as a character piece alone it is thoroughly entertaining. Tom Hardy showcases his versatility once again and his dual performance as the notorious twins is seamlessly impressive. And David Thewliss & Taron Edgerton are both worthy mentions also. The story itself is serviceable and feels somewhat aimless and inevitable. But the stylisation of the 50's & 60's, the music, violence and humour all collaborates entertainingly.

It can't shake off the feeling of some sort of aimlessness and plodding about before reaching its inevitable conclusion. But this is my kind of film, mainly thanks to the accents and appropriately colloquial (and coarse) Cockney dialect, which I always find fun to watch and listen to. Also thanks to Tom Hardy's dual performance, which he succeeds in making these twins somewhat similar, yet still not like the same person -- both are a blast to watch on screen.

Maybe if I had ever actually heard of the Kray brothers, or maybe if I was English it would be different, but "Legend" is a sub-optimal crime movie, it's a sub-optimal period piece, and it's a sub-optimal love story. I can't deny that the character's have life in them, they're interesting people, but such is the nature of movies, even uninteresting people can be made fascinating with a rewrite. For all it's faults, dual roles for Hardy only proves that he's among the best in the business.

A lot of wasted potential. Hardy is absolutely excellent, and it seems like there should be a good story here. But it's so uneven and there's literally nothing carrying you from one scene to the next. The great individual sequences end up getting lost in the overall picture.

Tom Hardy convincingly portrays two gangster brothers. Little of their criminal activity was shown. Emily Browning gave a good performance as the wife & narrator. Several other notable actors provided excellent cameo performances. The story was heavily focused on the brothers, so Hardy's roles were very prominent. Good production quality & music. It was somewhat interesting but not particularly satisfying.

Decent, if very uneven, glimpse of the unpleasant Cockney gangsters' antics. Kudos to Hardy for tackling the twin roles; the performances are largely effective, although Ronnie starts to stretch credibility somewhat. There isn't much of a plot, and the tone and focus veer all over the place, but it works to an extent as an assembly of well-realised scenes. The supporting cast are generally very good, in particular Browning as Reggie's damaged wife. Perhaps doesn't quite live up to its potential.

A fine movie that really feels like it wants to be Goodfellas. It's getting many bonus points for the stellar performances. Tom Hardy is great as usual and Browning, Thewlis, and Egerton are on point as well. Unfortunately the story doesn't feel all that interesting (at least compared to most gangster movies) beyond the actual dynamic of the two brothers. It does have one of the more intense stabbing scenes I've ever seen.

Whilst the gimmick of Hardy playing both roles is seamlessly handled ( albeit he comes across as a sort of Ron and Russell Mael tribute act) it cannot detract from a fairly mundane (& wildly inaccurate) story where the only real bright spot is the luminance of Emily Browning. This attempt to "legend-ise" the Krays has cartoon underworld baddies coming and going throughout without much ripple making. Not sure how you make a film about the Kray twins that is honest AND exciting, but this wasnt it.

A really trying ordeal to sit through. Tom Hardy acts the roles of two twin brothers in a style that would work best as a comic book. The London around them doesn't feel genuine, it's too barren. These men do not feel renowned or feared. This film is far too long and most of the script is a mess. Nothing ever happened with those US mobsters. Every plot point is just a sudden outburst of local violence. The best thing in the film was Emily Browning and she was barely developed as a subplot. Ugh.

Having Hardy play twins works great. Good supporting cast. The backdrop of the sixties is cool and convincing. Maybe if they had spent more times showing the Crays being gangsters, rather than dealing with bookkeepers and money men.

The highlight of this film is the great dual performance from Tom Hardy. He's pretty excellent, easily making each brother different & memorable. And most of the time they did a good job of making it seem as if they really were two separate people, but not always. As for the film itself, I didn't find it hugely interesting. A highly fictionalized script, one of those tiresome combinations of sentimentality and snark. The McVitie murder scene is emblematic of how shamelessly everything is spun to be about the twins' relationship, Reggie's girl Frances, and other personal drama. Ths violence is at once a bit excessive and yet prettied-up to be screen-friendly. It's Tom Hardy, in arguably his finest performance, and an excellent supporting cast, who make this engaging for all its flaws.

It might be tempting to call this a cautionary tale. Legend does show that bad people doing bad things bring about bad ends. But while the extrapolated story doesn't try to excuse the Krays for their loathesome ways, neither does it shy away from their celebrity. Certainly Universal's marketers have chosen to emphasize that latter bit of sensationalism, playing up the glamour and big-money madness in the trailers. Is there any better word for Tom Hardy than brilliant? He's just so... damn... brilliant! It's kind of unfortunate though that this whole picture didn't really capture me the way I had hoped. It's not even close to being bad, and Tom Hardy is, again, brilliant, but I guess I had hoped for the gangster life of the 50's and 60's to grab me and not let me go. It didn't do that for me. But for Hardy's performance(s) alone, you should definitely see this. I hope he wins something for this year.

Tom Hardy as a gay pedophile schizophrenic may be his best performance yet; his roles as the Kray twins makes the movie worth the watch. Has all the potential to be great, but fell short in the hands of a director who for some reason thought this needed to involve a woman with a golden heart falling in love with a violent psychopath. Why the fuck would you make this movie about that? It also ended more times than The Wolf of Wall Street

While the film is largely entertaining, Hangeland's uninspired script presents the notorious criminals in far too playful a manner, and this light-hearted handling of the material, combined with Hardy's cartoonish Ronnie Kray performance, prevent the film from being taken at all seriously. Hardy's Reggie is the highlight but the supporting characters lack any punch, and the narration is horrid.
