It's a charming, captivating film that works on several levels as it tackles sexuality and race in the context of self-image, sexual relationships, family and society in general. It may not say something that hasn't been said before, but the consistent characterization and very solid, effective acting from the two leads draw you in. You can tell it comes from the heart and from personal experiences, and the combination of inner turmoil with a certain surrender to romantic fantasies is soothing.
