Leap of Faith

Funny and warm tale. Not Martin's best, but entertaining.

Am I wrong to enjoy watching fake faith healer movies? Great cast that provided an entertaining development of characters climaxed with a touching ending.

Seems caught between drafts. Fortunately the love quadrangle stuff, at least jealousies etc., isn't foregrounded, but the rest is both thinly drawn and overstuffed. There is too much of Martin preaching, which I don't think he really pulls off. I would have rather it made sense of his relationship with Winger, explored the organization: Meat Loaf, M.C. Gainey, and Philip Seymour Hoffman have like ten lines combined. Neeson, miscast (shucksy skeptical sheriff). Davidovich stunning. Ending bad.

Strikes the wrong tone sometimes, the ending left me scratching my head, and the romantic subplots are weak, but it is a captivating look at a shady industry. The end result of that shady industry is even justified at times throughout this movie. And Martin brings the whole thing to life.

Extremely uneven comedy/drama that takes an admirably honest look at the world of phony faith healers. The sermons are the best part: funny, full of energy and allowing Martin to take advantage of his years of stand-up. In contrast, when he's not on screen the flick falls flat, especially when wasting time on the underdeveloped romantic sub-plots. Even the climax leaps from being poor to poignant then back to iffy. Watchable, but definitely not without its flaws.

Steve Martin cheats and prays. Debra helps. Lolita looks fine.

Good

Not really funny, but not really emotional/dramatic, either. This is really just kind of there. Plus, I hate Lukas Haas, so this movie doesn't appeal to me much at all.
