The film follows fifteen-year-old Charley Thompson. He wants a home, food on the table and a high school he can attend for more than part of the year. As the son of a single father working in warehouses across the Pacific Northwest, stability is hard to find. Hoping for a new start they move to Portland, Oregon where Charley takes a summer job, with a washed-up horse trainer, and befriends a failing racehorse named Lean on Pete. (imdb)

Most crushingly sad movie I've ever seen. And this isn't just another example of Hollywood's idiotic examinations of self-destructive behavior, it's about other people's self-destructive behavior crashing down on his head from all sides with inexperience and bad luck being added for good measure--Sort of like if the biblical Job was 15. The ending was neither happy nor sad, but uplifting.

Unlike any other coming of age film I've seen, which leads me to think that isn't quite what this is. I think it might actually be the inverse. As an audience member you're hoping that this tale isn't Charley's coming of age. You hope he can retain his innocence and youth throughout this trying ordeal and come of age later on once circumstances have improved. Video essay: https://youtu.be/-xMwK0lrnwc

The subject matter probably won't strike many as Weekend or 45 Years level impressive, but Lean on Pete is Andrew Haigh's richest, most mature and elaborately directed work to date. Quite a dark coming-of-age story with a terrific lead performance by Charlie Plummer.

A solid coming of age type film, although it's much deeper than that genre normally runs. Plummer gives us a strong performance of a kid who has it rough and it keeps on getting rougher. A lot of nice supporting spots help cement the world crafted by Haigh, who does a nice job guiding us through it.

This movie felt very authentic and was entertaining and engaging from start to finish. Performances were superb. The title seems like an odd choice. Excellent writing, direction, acting and overall production quality. The characters were relatable and well developed. It alternates between sweet and heartbreaking. I really liked the overall tone of this movie, and the ending was quite satisfying.

Aside from the occasional plot holes (Charley gets a few too many lucky breaks based on the indifference/incompetence of adults), a lovely film with a fantastic performance from Charlie Plummer.

A dark, thoughtful, patient film with gorgeous cinematography and a central performance that draws you in and breaks your heart.

What a dark, bleak film. Lean on Pete showcases ethereal direction from Andrew Haigh that, when combined with a lack of melancholy in a plot that could have easily gone in such a direction, makes for a very mature coming-of-age film. Charlie Plummer showcases more depth than I have seen in any actor his age with his world-weary performance in this brutal odyssey that may be hard to watch due to its pacing but is excellent nonetheless.

If there's a horse on the poster of a movie, you know something bad will happen to the horse and probably its owner. But this is not a cruel movie that bathes in misery. It's sensitive and i really like the quiet naturalistic style. Maybe lacking in a bit of humor but it's better not to try it than to fail at that. The lack of music certainly helps! Buscemi and Sevigny are always a treat, seeing them together (20 years after Trees Lounge) is a party.

Gut wrenching and agonizing but ultimately satisfying, this is one of the better dramas I've seen in 2018. Someone once said that if a film creates strong emotional reactions in the viewer, then the film's creators have been successful, and Lean on Pete certainly did that for me.

Very emotional coming-of-age road movie, though any sentimentality is very much restrained. Surprisingly goes from plot point to plot point in an episodic manner, each one never retraced once it's gone, which shows just how ethereal Charley's journey is. This character is fairly hard to identify with, as his motivations seem to come from the ether as well. A fun depressing watch.

Andrew Haigh churned out another solid film, probably better than 45 Years. I counted the cuts and it totalled to 254.

Porn. It isn't meaningful only because it makes you feel something. Only because it's true that doesn't make it smart.

A movie about the stupidest, most obnoxious, and most unlikeable 16 year old ever. Well made though and the story was interesting for about an hour.

This engaging tale with a strong lead performance by newcomer Charlie Plummer would be my favorite from Haigh so far. And it's one of the very best movies of 2017.

The book is way, way darker and bleaker than the movie is. A little bit disappointing when you've read the story before you see the movie, but of course movies are more restricted by their ratings than books are. Still a beautiful movie with some great acting.

Low key and sombre drama lacks the urgency you might expect (especially as the hero's circumstances become more dire) but is still an interesting rumination on grief, poverty and bad circumstance; enlivened and enriched by uniformly excellent cameos (Buscemi's down and out horse trainer and Zahn's unexpectedly terrifying drunk are highlights), and held together by Plummer's magnetic lead performance. Ultimate lack of resolution of its multiple plot threads is a little frustrating.

Well then. Certainly one of the most unexpectedly deflating films I've ever seen. People who came to see a road film about a boy and his horse will be in for a rude awakening.
