Meticulous costumes and sets appear cheap because of the crude lighting usually used in French cinema. Film direction isn't too hot either. The few visual effects are a bit cheesy. Plot is quite predictible. Lacks historical context/references (i.e. How did these Jesuit priests end up in the Imperial Court of China?). Wouldn't work without Fan Bingbing's beauty.
