I didn't enjoy this one bit. I mean, I guess Anna Karina and the romantic story was worthwhile, but I didn't care about the torture or the assassinations or any of the terrorist stuff at all. Pretty weak.

Karina was awesome and the romance subplot was great, but the rest sort of paled in comparison.

Godard's second film--originally banned due to its controversial subject matter addressing France's suppression of the Algerian Revolution--makes a biting statement about the absurdity of political violence and rigid ideology. Its harrowing torture scenes remain tough to watch.

Quite politically complex, especially given that it was filmed in 1960, and in some ways its significance may have appreciated over time.

Considering it's Godard, it felt like amateur hour. Looks like they had almost no budget and the lead actor was terrible. Karina saves it though.

Semana em honra de Anna Karina (1940 - 2019) filme #5, uma das grandes verdadeiras musas da minha cinefilia. Considero esse um Godard menor da fase anos 60, é quase intolerável quando Anna Karina não está em cena. DVDRip moonflux .

Stylistically, it feels like a retread of Breathless (the only Godard film that truly does, in my eyes), but without as much energy or excitement. Instead, it's languid and shifty, and though I admire Godard's attempt to confront politics head-on so early in his career, the scenes of torture, assassination and intrigue are unfulfilling. However, the romantic subplot with Anna Karina generally hits the right notes, containing some wonderful bits of dialogue.

The romantic subplot is the most entertaining and real element in this movie. When Godard's characters are saying things like "Aside from ourselves, our own faces, our own voices, we have nothing", I'm delighted, because I'm a romantic like that. The political elements, on the other hand, seem very forced and are often comical. Gibberish about assassination and what it takes to kill a man, tacky torture scenes, and some insipid monologues from the lead actor bring this down a lot.

Way too pompous and literary. I don't mind movies that make you think, but I don't appreciate a movie that gives you homework. I liked the overall style, though.

Dear JLG, you got your wish. The film was banned in France. But, it didn't win me over. I expected more from you. --h.
