This movie depicts an auto race during the 70s on the world's hardest endurance course: Le Mans in France. The race goes over 24 hours on 14.5 kilometers of cordoned country road. Every few hours the two drivers per car alternate but it's still a challenge for concentration and material. (IMDb)

could technically be the ultimate car movie since there is nothing else going on but cars driving down the track

While as a motor-racing fan I can find elements of this movie to enjoy, if your not a fan of watch cars go around a track (a lot!) then give this a miss. I can't give it a high mark really, simply because there is no plot or dialogue to speak of!

The plot and dialogue seems tacked on to this gorgeous looking car movie and it would probably be better off if they'd let the racing speak for itself for the entire runtime.

Just watch the first 10 minutes to see one of the most iconic watches of all times (Tag Heuer Monaco) on McQueen's right wrist, then skip to the last 10 minutes to watch the end of the race... nothing in between

You have to really dig racing to get into this movie, because there's about eight minutes of story in its 106 minute runtime. If you DO like racing, you'll find this realistic and fascinating.

LE MANS belongs to that 60s-70s mini-trend of sports films that show sports as dangerous and dehumanizing, and show the sportsmen as laconic and emotionally shut-off. It clearly imitates GRAND PRIX--which wasn't a masterpiece to begin with. There's little plot or character, and the acting is largely confined to stoic staring, and we have little reason to care. Technically, though, it's extremely well done, with some stylish editing, great cinematography and a lovely Michel Legrand score.

We meet the racers. We get the basic idea who they are. Nobody speaks. Eventually they do, but we learn not a lot about them. The film is about racing, and why people do it even in the face of lethal danger. It's peppered with a couple of exciting sequences ... a pair of amazing crashes and a tense climax ... but it's mostly just cool and kind of hypnotic. They do not make movies like this anymore.

Not much of a story but all the racing is great.

An admirably single-minded depiction of the titular race, providing an almost documentary level of realism in its establishing moments (unavoidably reminiscent of WOODSTOCK). Outside of wanting name actors to star, it's questionable why you wouldn't just make a documentary and be done with it - the smattering of "private life" moments are unavoidably limp, dragging the film down, before swinging back to the mightily impressive track scenes (with the judicious use/absence of sound a highlight).

It's a film about the essence of a driver, rather than the race itself.
