So much more than simply a spoof of 1960s espionage movies, Le Magnifique pulls us effortlessly into the life of a compulsive writer, torn between personal stressors and the pressure of finishing his new novel in the shadow of a romantic entanglement; I think of Jean Dujardin as the only actor coming even close to matching Belmondo's physicality, spot-on delivery and priceless facial expressions. So I recommend both OSS 117 movies if you've enjoyed this one.

Marvelous film about character development and how writers are influenced by things that happen to them or have happened to them on a daily basis. It was also funny to boot.

söyleyecek bir şeyleri olan bir film. ancak bu amaç olacakken araç haline geliyor. saçma sapan sözde güldürü sakız gibi uzadıkça uzuyor. bu da filmi açıkcası çekilmez hale getiyor.

Viewed March 4, 2018. The opening 10 minutes are brilliant, a madcap spy thriller whose ridiculousness increases exponentially until Belmondo is kissing his own muscles and Bisset is telling him flatly, "Girls are attracted to you." When this shifts into the real world, where Belmondo is actually a writer of spy novels and Bisset is his attractive neighbor, it's initially quite exciting. I'm not sure that this duality is ever fully explored, but there's a lot to like here, conceptually speaking.

Always on the verge of slapstick, Le Magnifique is not a terribly sophisticated comedy. I thought it was interesting the way Christine (Bisset) ended up influencing Merlin's (Belmondo) writing, radically changing his literary alter-ego, but whatever dramatic insight Le Magnifique might have had is effectively neutralized by the film's struggle to be funny.
