Le Beau Serge was the first film of French critic-turned-director Claude Chabrol. Though not a murder melodrama, the film is heavily influenced by the works of Chabrol's idol Alfred Hitchcock, Shadow of a Doubt in particular. Ailing city dweller Francois (Jean-Claude Brialy) makes a therapeutic return visit to his home town in the country. Here he visits childhood friend Serge (Gerard Blain), and is appalled to find how far Serge has plummeted into alcoholism and self-pity. (amazon.com)

Chabrol doesn't appear to have much of a distinctive style or voice. Although there is a certain freedom and ambivalence to what he's doing here, there's not much about it that says "New Wave." It definitely looks great for a first film, some of the scenes are quite beautiful. The characters feel genuine, with the naive but well-meaning Francois and the angry, bitter drunk Serge at the center. But it's all just kind of dull. It left me feeling not much of anything about it.

Though well-meant, most of it fails to really engage. It may be partly by fault of the acting. It's very nicely shot though and the ending is redeeming. Le Beau Serge reminded me just a little bit of Masaki Kobayashi's Black River.

Sometimes called the first New Wave film, it is merely the first feature by a "Cahiers" critic. It lacks a consistent style. Starting out with what is supposed to be Neo-Realism (but which looks more like British Kitchen Sink), it soon darkens and starts looking like Bresson with a few touches of Hitchcock and Lang thrown in. There is one fine sequence at a town dance, and one stunning effect--falling snow used as a transition--but there is not enough here to make a memorable film.

É bem interessante, em especial pelos conflitos cidade grande/cidade pequena simbolizados na dicotomia François/Serge. O papel da mulher na sociedade da cidade é bastante chocante, instigando François a lutar por alguma mudança.
