This film is all over the place. There are some good performances in this film, Rebecca Hall gives a good performance in a role I haven't seen her play before, The script is a mess, some good moments, some questionable ones. Overall this film is a miss.

How good is Lay the Favorite? Good enough that it didn't feel like I was completely wasting my time by watching it. Sadly, though, I also didn't feel like I was gaining anything by sitting through it. Its characters are inconsistent and unmotivated, and the film as a whole is unfocused -- both in its plot and its tone. There isn't a lot here to grab onto or learn from, and it's not even particularly entertaining. It's there, and it's not horrible. That's it.

It feels like the upbeat happy version of Two for the Money. Plus Laura Prepon is topless in the movie for most guys that's happy right there.

Intermittently fun, but too uneven to be actually worthwhile.

There is a certain Frears' identity all over it -- as usual, his characters seem to be happysad, miserable, naive but ultimately (and unpredictably) catchy --, and the story, despite the screenwriters' lack of excelence with the source material, bring an amusing sense of people affecting other people, loving them, giving themselves all they can, moving on and often coming back together as different persons, with different moods and situations. Rebecca is lovely, but the film looks phony.

A likeable cast wasted in a painfully unfunny comedy. *Preview*: #12#, exp-3*, popcorn, story, cast, R1.

A hard-to-market high-concept rom-com lacking in rom and heavy on R-rated com. A solid cast both above-the-line and supporting (Laura Prepon forever) are dragged down by a screenplay that's unsure what it wants to be. As an aside, the marketing for this in the UK was shambolic; I get that gambling can be a hard sell in promo material, but YOU DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER WITH PROMO MATERIAL. You've got a strong A- and B-list cast here, and you barely invest in trailers or press? No wonder it bombed out
