If Tom Hardy were any cooler his sweat would come out as sleet. If Jessica Chastain were any hotter her sweat would come out as steam. Shia's is just salty-water like all us normal people.

Predictable, messy, and disappointing. They had one of the best fucking casts I've seen in a while, and they barely used them, instead making the story mostly about amateurish Shia Labeouf. Tom Hardy turned out the best performance, but he was given more material than the rest of the great actors. Chastain, Wasikowska, Oldman, and Pierce are all painfully underused. It is beautiful and has a lot of potential, but it is aimless and incoherent overall. Great idea, great cast, horrible execution.

It has its qualities in performances, atmosphere, and a smattering of badass moments, but I'm definitely disappointed compared to the meat-and-potatoes Western-tinged thriller the trailers seemed to suggest. The story is aimless, structureless, and meandering, with many scenes that don't seem to inform the scenes that come after in any way. Gary Oldman is insanely underused and poor Jessica Chastain barely gets a character to play.

Its a shame when something that has so much promise falters as Lawless does. Legit premise, great cast (in spite of the criminal under-utilization of Oldman), and some very cool gritty violence all seems in vain when the script is so messy. Still, a cast full of caricatures in in 1930's Hickville USA is pretty fun.

You can beat me nearly to death, you can slit my brother's throat and leave him for dead, you can rape his girlfriend, you can tar and feather my cousin, you can blow up my lively hood, you can murder my best friend, you can shoot me in the ribs, and you can shoot my brother, but you CANNOT shoot him again. It's decent enough I guess, but at the same time it never got an emotional reaction out of me. Pearce is completely ridiculous but maybe the only memorable thing about the whole affair. I would have preferred an entire movie worth of Gary Oldman shooting shit with a tommygun, instead of the 2 minutes we got.

Any movie that features a man getting beaten to death with a shovel can't be that bad. Thought the whole cast did great and appreciated Jessica Chastain's nude scene thoroughly. Had some pointless love subplots but ultimately suffers from an anti-climatic ending which leaves you feeling nothing for the film. Needed more Gary Oldman as well

Wait, where was Gary Oldman?! Entertaining little action film, with extreme violence. I just felt that if they'd taken the story a bit more seriously, rather than taking what was a true story and making it into a light revenge thriller. These guys probably had way more exciting anecdotes that could've been turned into much better films.

LAWLESS might fairly be compared to HEAVEN'S GATE; both painstakingly recreate a time, place, and millieu (in this case, 30s Virginian bootlegging culture), both boast superb casts and show much technical skill...and both fail to tell a coherent story. LAWLESS is the better film not least because it is quite enjoyable at times; the acting is good, the cinematography is lovely, and individual scenes work well...but Nick Cave's script lacks a narrative core to hold it all together. What a shame.

There's good and bad to be found here. The bad is the under-utilization of both Oldman's and Chastain's characters; an ending that may be true but still feels contrived and scripted; the LaBeouf/Wasikowska love angle; an antagonist (Pearce) that, while played well, is a total fucking douchebag for no apparent reason. Luckily, what's good tends to be great. Awesome music, atmosphere, and a great show from Tom Hardy. I enjoyed the subtle comedic elements. The climactic firefight is solid. See it!

Jack's story of being up to the task rather than living in his brothers' shadow, which takes Hillcoat and his writer Cave some time to establish, could've benefited from a stronger focus. It does a fine job however in capturing 1930's bootlegging era and the characters did eventually grow on me. Fist -and gunfights are minimalistic yet effective and unflinching.

I know what this contrived, shapeless, and inauthentic Nick Cave script needs: Shia LaBeouf! Yeah, and we can make him do a completely lifeless voice over narration to make his presence all the more apparent. That'll make things a little more tolerable.

An excellent assemblage of actors who pull off a fine historical bootlegging story. Never really had any respect for LaBeouf before this, but even he does a good job. But the shining star is right there on the cover, Hardy makes an excellent stoic bootlegger. I might be in the minority on this one, but I love big clumps of dirt and grime on my crime movies, no polished sheen or style.

While this is a good movie in almost every respect, it never really goes beyond that. With some standout performances by Hardy and Pearce as well as the fantastic direction and cinematography, the movie is only brought down by the averageness of the other performances and shallow and predictable story. Very, very disappointing. I found it dreadful & tedious. Pearce was definitely the best. Hardy was dull. LaBeouf & his character weren't interesting enough to carry the film. Chastain & Wasikowska were good, but underused. Having Oldman in the film & then have his character be completely unnecessary is a crime. There wasn't much plot to speak of, & what there was, was very predictable. The pacing was off and the editing wasn't great either. Mostly, I was just bored & couldn't wait for it to end.

The worst kind of gangster cinema. Writing without any spark, performances without any gravitas and hyperviolence without any sense of purpose. Dull as dishwater, predictable Hollywood. It's getting bad when I can accurately predict the outcome of a movie 10 minutes into it. Maybe that's why the whole "rags to riches gangster" genre has become so tedious. I don't care what era or drug it's about, if you're not going to make it somewhat unique or fresh then don't bother.

Overall enjoyable, but significantly flawed. Major plus points are the surprisingly good LaBeouf & the strength of Hardy, Chastain & Oldman as performers. Unfortunately Oldman is on screen for about 1 minute, & like all the characters bar LaBeouf's, Chastain & Hardy aren't given enough meaningful material to make their presences matter. The promising first half unwinds into self adoring machoism by the second with a plot that meanders aimlessly. Nice ideas, with a slightly shabby execution.

Great potential but this simply isn't anywhere near the level of Boardwalk Empire. Laboeuf manages to not completely ruin the film, which is a surprise, but unfortunately the writing spends way too much time on boring love sub-plots and not enough time showing how these brothers build a bootlegging business while maintaining the loyalty of the county. Gary Oldman should have had a much bigger role, and Laboeuf and Pearce much smaller. The production design is solid, but the soundtrack is wrong.

A solidly good film. With a classic (aka predictable) story they focused very much on the nuance. Which did work but I think they got a little carried away and forgot to look at the big picture. Definetely a disappointment, although it's still a decent movie with some standout performances. Some of this fantastic cast are severely wasted in this film (Oldman particuarly), but Hardy is notably awesome once again. The movie itself just kind of meanders around, introducing characters that don't really matter, occasionaly getting really violent for no real reason, and giving us a bad guy seemingly just for the sake of it. 10 bonus points for nude Jessica Chastain.

A really fantastic crime drama -- even though the ending, as some have already said, IS a bit anti-climactic. Absolutely loved Guy Pearce's sleazy policeman character, and even thought Shia LaBeouf played the "wet-behind-the-ears, foolhardy younger brother" role well. It has a devastating lack of focus, with many unnecessary or underexplored subplots like the romances with the female leads, the Chicago gangster they're selling to, and the corruption of local law enforcement. The last half hour is really entertaining, when they finally picks a storyline to maintain for consecutive scenes, and everything besides the script and (I'm guessing) the editing is amazing, so this is worth seeing.

Mia Wasikowska didn't really do much (in fact, I don't think she spoke until halfway through) nor did Jessica Chastain, come to think of it. Tom Hardy plays a total badass, as usual, complemented by solid performances from Jason Clarke, Shia and the rest of the amazing supporting cast in what is a great - albeit gruesome and bloody - portrayal of strong family relations, sibling loyalty and patriarchal duties. Still, the mentioned gruesome elements of the film felt off-key compared to the created atmosphere. And so did Guy Pearce - however good his performance - whose character was a little bit too comic-book-alike to fit in.

It's refreshing to see this era and location done right in a big budget R-rated film, but after The Proposition I was expecting a lot more from the team of Hillcoat, Cave & co..
Instead, this is closer to a Roger Corman/AIP action film from the 70's. It's got a stellar cast, but I felt that Hardy, Chastain and Oldman were all a bit underused and LaBeouf was barely adequate. The film became a bit generic after mid-point montage when it started to wrap things up and rush towards an ending.

Now, Shia isn't terrible, but he is very average as an actor and he ends up sticking out like a sore thumb in an otherwise stellar cast. The "true story" of 1930's moonshiners is ripe for an awesome adaptation - so, while what is presented here is shot beautifully and unflinchingly in even the most brutal scenarios, I can't help but wonder how they managed to make such interesting material come across as kinda boring...

The "growing up" of the youngest brother was a nice transition and even a fun one since the oldest brothers didn't come to his rescue until they really had that. That was a great change from the normal story lines and great character development. Quite an entertaining story, tho I would have liked a better ending, it rounded up quite well.

Well, we have some pretty scenery and that awesome guy from Bronson, I guess we don't need a decent plot, or for anything to actually happen, or to write decent female characters. Oh shit, Gary Oldman just showed up and shot someone! Did you get that? Let's put him in the movie!

It was an alright movie. Visually pleasing but maybe a bit dull at times.

growly-growl. could've used some depth. or just better writing.
did not like the ending (starting with the shootout) or pearce's cartoonish character.

A potentially great film ruined by a particularly weak 2nd half. Messy after a very good start.

Disappointing and slow moving. Guy Pierce was the only thing good about this.

A bunch of solid performances from professionals just going through the motions but everything that happens feels ultimately pointless.

The movie could have been way better than what it turned out to be. The movie was predictable all throughout. I havent read the book but I guess the focus on one character played by LaBeouf was the cause of the downfall. A movie that could have definitely been significantly better and enthralling.

Chastain is hot. Hardy and Clarke are badasses. Labeouf is awful

Very nice-looking but uneven movie. Tom Hardy is great, though, and I liked it overall.

A wonderful cast, even though it has Shia LeBeouf, gritty violence and some extremely tense moments make this movie pretty great. First of all can I just now profess my love for Jessica Chastain, my God she is beautiful and talented. Also, Mia Wasikowska is becoming one of my favorites too lately. So it was great to have those two lovely ladies in this movie. Also Tom Hardy and Guy Pearce were awesome in this. A good period peace that puts you firmly on the edge of your seat. I love it!

He, he listen. This has bootlegger music. You know. Bootlegger music. And it's about bootleggers. How cool is that? And Shia LaBeouf plays this really tough guy role. This must be a cool movie right? Right?

Interesting Prohibition-era and bootlegging-subject, but flat characters, sloppy story and storytelling kill a lot of the potential.
On the positive side are the ever reliable Hardy and an underused Oldman, a cinematography and setting that adds to the era-feel and a good soundtrack.
More gritty bootlegging and less shitty love and this one could have been so much better.

Not enough Oldman. Too many characters all around spread the development far too thin. Some pretty gritty scenes and tense moments but there are too many wasted moments and LaBeouf's narration is overcooked and unnecessary.

A dirty but by-the-numbers gangster flick with all the Nick Cave touches you could expect based on his music - set in the South, sadistic rednecks and cops galore, horrific violence paired with innocent romance and sexual undertones. Not bad though. Tom Hardy is great at making a larger than life figure feel realistic enough to keep suspension of disbelief but silly enough to be played for laughs too. Shia LaBeouf is tolerable! I refuse to believe that actually is Guy Pearce.
