The film is remarkable in that it presents a problem for a character in one scene and then in the next that character solves it with no issue.

The only thing distinctive about this movie is that it’s about as close as any movie has come to the definition of ‘average’. There are hardly any truly funny jokes, the story structure is as basic as it gets, and many character arcs are extremely rushed. A very mediocre script from Kaling, which is a shame as I like her a lot. Still, good turns from Thompson and Lithgow, and everyone else is fine.

Late Night is an enjoyable comedy that falls short of being great -as it doesn’t satisfyingly explore its premise of the writers’ room- and falls short of being poignant -as Kaling indelicately juggles pop culture relevance, feminism and romance, despite initial commentary on the “Late Night” game. The film is reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada, but 13 years later the concept no longer is as fresh. A few clever jokes and commendable representation, but the film is ultimately fluffy.

Perfectly fine plane watching. Emma Thompson should be in more stuff.

Will it leave a lasting impression on you? No, maybe not, but sometimes these films are exactly what we need: good-natured, well-acted, generally low-stakes comedies that are just relevant enough to be satisfying. I'm reminded of things like Devil Wears Prada or The Terminal. The script is solid and Thompson absolutely slays this role.

Late Night isn't a gut-buster as consistently as one might expect, but its deeper exploration of being a woman in a male-dominated field makes it more complicated and thematically rewarding than other comedies of its type.

I totally forgot I watched this until I happened upon it just now, probably not a good sign but I still remember liking it a bit.

It had a lot of holes that could have been filled in but I quite liked the premise.

More of a drama than a comedy, but still a good watch.

Doesn't earn any of its predictable turns and its *multiple* weird hetero relationships were shoehorned in by a 2x4 (that shoulder kiss at the end?? no thanks! why!) but it has a moment or two along the way and generally speaking it's easy to digest. Forgettable at best.

I thought it would be a movie about accessing places that were very limited to women and WOC, or the staleness of comedy showbusiness. It starts out a bit like that, but it quickly turns into some sort of weird "let's tame the egotistical person with honest kindness" story. I wasn't convinced that Thompson's character needed to be defended, even against the "bad guys" they threw in. I expected something deeper than "let's befriend a mean celebrity".

Both Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling do a good job in this movie, The script is good except I would have liked a different ending. Overall I would recommend this movie.

Mindy's script feels like it was churned out by a faulty algorithm fed nothing but buzzfeed articles and the Devil Wears Prada screenplay. An offensively bad "comedy" that lacks any laughs and shoehorns in as much obnoxious outdated PC jibberish, hypocrisy and hatred for white men as Kaling and her Indian lesbian director friend could convince Amazon is what sells. Emma Thompson was OK but not sure why they tried so hard to make her resemble David Bowie. Lost amazon 40 million. Lesson learned?

Frustratingly toothless satire feels like a DEVIL WEARS PRADA rehash (and suffers from similar problems) - Kaling's screenplay threatens to take off into something wonderful so many times that it becomes all the more disappointing when it settles for the safe and easy - also falls into the trap of presenting a "successful" comedian using material that really isn't all that funny; ditto the absurd depiction of how live television would deal with some of the uncomfortable moments which transpire.

Kaling had some things to say, but she does it in an all too familiar way. And while Thompson has charm to spare, the film doesn't.

Damn good movie. Even with all the ridiculous cosmetic diversity cheese at the end. Blends drama and comedy as well as it does light-heartedness and emotional resonance. It's this very unique vibe I'm gonna call "light-heartfelted" from now on. Not really something to rewatch a bunch of times, though. Unless you're, like, hungover on a sunday and you've seen all your other hangover go-to ones too many times... "The Fired Man's Seat" would make a great title for a poem or something.

Anytime you deal with this kind of stuff you run the risk of propagating certain ideas that aren't entirely true, so you have to thread carefully and hit the factual stuff and ignore propaganda. This does that sometimes, and even when it fails I wasn't put off. On top of that, it had some pretty decent laughs but not enough to be a great comedy. It sacrificed those for heart, which it did succeed in. As noted, Thompson was the standout here.

All the jokes told by the characters feel extremely dated and on the whole the movie feels stale and not at all fresh. I was also disappointed in how little of her own story Kaling's character Molly got.

A dramedy that's decent way to spend 90 minutes. Not too serious, not too funny, interesting characters, but ultimately unmemorable. If you liked "The Mindy Project," you'll probably like this.

Ellen De Generes filmini yazmış. Gece show'u yapan kadın komedyen, reytingler düşünce yeni arayışlara girer. İşe ilk kez bir kadın stand-up alınır. İlk başta uyum olmazken, sonra işini kaybetme korkusuyla ilişkiler arasında sıcak bağ kurmaya başlanır. Emma Thompson'un harika oyunculuğu, Mindy Kaling'in kötü oyunculuğu bastırıyor. Senaryoda saçmalıklar da gırla. Gecelerin kadınıyım, komedinin kralıyım. Eğer beni kovarsan otur baştan yaz beni.

Late Night isn't really about television or comedy writing, although Thompson does well as a late night talk show host. As such, it works fine as a character-driven drama, but is a bit of a let-down if you come in expecting more funny bits. While I don't fault Kaling for writing what she knows best, it is a minor point of irritation that she wrote herself in as such a perfect foil for Thompson's character -- the convenient female anti-"white savior", if you will.

I wanted to like this movie because it has a lot of talented people in it and it does manage to have funny stuff in it. I didn't though ... it's very poorly constructed, some of which is Kaling's fault, but a lot of it seems to be the direction. It's very much like a random selection of scenes slapped together with not much thought to how they might work together to tell a story. Plot threads jump up and get suddenly dropped, occasionally to return 40 minutes later, but sometimes not.

Not funny enough to be a successful comedy, not dramatic enough to be a successful drama, not filmed in an interesting way (dull direction), and direction didn't really align with my perceived intent of the script.

Emma Thompson is her usual adept and flawless self (my favorite performance is in "Stranger Than Fiction"), while Mindy Kakling is the off screen overweight token minority comedienne with a degree of talent, who plays one on screen. In addittion to the political correctness, the plot indicates itself to be in the leftist political camp in it's support of Planned Parenthood. But later it shoots itself in the left foot (which I must assume was intentional), when Mz. Newbery, while interviewing t
