Think of Brando's character as the voracious, anarchic sexuality the bride must acquaint herself with before she can marry. She learns well from Priapus, then destroys him. Ritualistic and primitive, this film packs a wallop like a Grimms fairy tale.

One of Brando's most underrated and riveting performances. "I'm gonna get a pig and I'm gonna have the pig fuck you. I want the pig to vomit in your face and I want you to swallow the vomit. Yeah! I want the pig to die while you're fucking him. Then you'll have to go around behind him. I want you to smell the dying farts of the pig. Are you gonna do all that for me?" ..For you, Mr. Brando, yes. Yes I would.

In depicting the rough, fiercely impersonal sexual relationship between Brando's broken widower and Schneider's Parisian inquisitive free spirit escaping the definitions other impose on her, Bertolucci is unsparing even as he constructs the film like a particularly heady dream. The uncompromising nature of the film can make for some discomfort in the viewing, but the richness of the emotions onscreen are what really lends the film its potency.

A 20 year old Jeanne, with unthinking indifference, lets a 50 year old Paul masturbate with her body. Jeanne wants real feeling, something she doesn't get from her insipid boyfriend. Paul, a rapist and asshole, wants to bury his hurt in Jeanne's body because his wife killed herself and his life is empty. The result is a mess of a movie that shows a more obvious thematic interest in a mostly clothed Paul than a completely naked Jeanne. Brando is good, but I'm not convinced this is a good movie.

You could remove everything but Marlon Brando, and I reckon it would still be a great film. But that would actually be a shame, for as much as Brando tops every other performance he did, Maria Schneider is just as essential here. Magic is created between them. Their relationship seems effortlessly profound and is entertainingly dramatic. Bertolucci deserves some mentioning too. Some of the best dialogue ever and it's all directed with a rare blend of spontanity, honesty and slight surrealism.

Brando plays a creepy asshole to the hilt and the contrast between glimpses of his fragility and the rest of his character is interesting, though underdeveloped. Some of the visuals are very nice, but not up to what I expected from Bertolucci and the content seemed rather hollow to me. I just have no point of reference to care about the themes in the film, so I was mostly entertained by its daring nature but not moved in any way.

A maginificent performance by Brando, but in this film, I truly despised his character. The atmosphere is of constant sadness and depression, and is extremely well presented. And the Characterization is brilliant, but be warned, if your used to the usual old school Brando, this film might completely change your views on him. He is not only terrifying, but he makes me think if these kind of people live among us.

Reviewing: Magnificently acted part of Marlon Brando was well portrait of a mourning husband and an agony of his lost love. Young Maria Schneider was really young during shooting, but she managed the opponent, target of Marlon's pain nicely. I always disliked the funny part of Jean-Pierre Léaud, but the director was right: his part was necessary to light the atmosphere of otherwise dark story.

Still has the power to shock 36 years later. While the graphic sexuality is occasionally vulgar to the point of being repulsive, the sex usually doesn't overwhelm the film's emotions, and it's totally uncompromising. Brando offers some of his absolute best work here; one scene in particular is perhaps the single finest bit of acting I've ever seen.

Impressive evocation of sexual sickness. One of the more decadent movies I've seen. You can practically feel the cold drafts coming into the apartment windows. Marlon Brando is brilliant, scary, sick. I did not find the subplot with the kid from "400 Blows" particularly interesting or enlightening. Beautifully shot, but maybe not quite as striking as "The Conformist."

Psychologically complicated, artsy, thoughtful romantic drama with Brando and Schneider both playing interesting characters, Brando is incredible. French New Wave icon Jean-Pierre Leaud also appears, playing yet another character that annoys me. Some great use of the camera and a lot of depth, though it never really quite comes together as much as it feels like it should. Still, a good and interesting film. Not quite sure why it got the NC-17 rating rather than R. The score is very effective.

A seldom mentioned virtue of L.T.I.P is a quality that's almost entirely absent from the current cultural landscape: genuine eroticism. Not just in terms of nudity, but as a persistent feature of sexual relations that's both desirable and problematic. Schneider oozes sensuality, an alluring mix of innocence and maturity; it's a brave performance that acquits itself adequately against Brando's tortured leonine presence, which is a hard act to match. It's a flawed film, but it's still intense.

I can imagine that Bertolucci might be addicted to his mental masturbation by manipulating his camera and actors, yet this tension made this movie a piece of artwork. Good rhythm and interesting transition of the story. I guess the female's image was nearly ideal for him, which is blatantly from a macho's perspective. Nevertheless, Schneider's acting is still convincing and natural. The bits about her finance and Brando's death especially enriched the colour.

A mix of good and bad. The good: a handful of well-written/performed scenes, its portrayal of romance gone bad, sexy talk by Brando, Maria Schneider's bush. The bad: wonky story progression, dialogue too quiet, seems only engaging to anyone as unlikeable as the characters.

Its lack of interest in emotions opens space for Bertolucci to craft a really hip and dirty-talked sex tale through the lives of a couple of bland characters. There is a such a showy sense of placing the camera and moving it back and forth while picturing conversations and confessions, that it eventually looks stylish only in the surface, good in its first hour and again when there is finally truth, tango, a gunshot and the girl feeling free after killing a total stranger she used to fuck with.

"Ultimo tango a Parigi" is an imperfect but occasionally sweeping erotic fantasy, uncompromisingly utilizing sex scenes to shake and challenge. Bertolucci's direction is brilliant, the cinematography is striking and the two protagonists are great -especially Brando. However, the opaqueness can be distracting and there are dull parts in the middle. Still, the final 20' are glorious. Godard's influence is apparent, although I think this surpasses "À bout de souffle".

One of the films I have a hard time understanding and thus, evaluating. Betolucci's world seems cold and cynical. Sexuality seems overtly violent and negative. Of course, there is no denying that Brando's acting is great, or that Bertolucci is an artist. I feel that I will have to revisit this film some time in the future, and that seeing it once isn't enough to understand what it is saying.

This is a movie about two different people at different places in their lives. One is a young girl who hasn't fully experienced love and the other is a middle aged man whose wife has recently killed herself. As one might expect their relationship is painful and broken, but heartfelt between them. As an art film, this is wholey watchable, but as a piece of modern entertainment in 2011 it is lacking.

Brando's performance is one for the ages, and the narrative is cleverly constructed with the two main stories intertwining into one in the end, but I'm really getting tired of Bertolucci's insisting use of sex as a catalyst for everything - good or bad. Jean Pierre Leaud's performance is really uplifting.

Might do very nicely on an evening of dinner, a movie and some light BDSM. Bertolucci's usual hackery only shines through here in the presence of the annoying Léaud (who was always more of an avatar for his directors than an actor, anyway). All the scenes with Brando are pure cinematic black magic, though. The butter scene is often mentioned, but my preference veers to his coffin-side meltdown and his two-fingers-up-the-chute rant on porcine roman showers. A dark delight.

Incredibly moving filmmaking. Bertolucci is at the absolute top of his game. Storaro continues to prove to me that he may in fact be the greatest cinematographer to ever live. However, the one true reason to see this film is Marlon fucking Brando. One of the greatest actors who ever lives gives the absolute best performance of his career. Moody, atmospheric, but this would be little more than a masturbatory "exercice de style" in film making if it weren't for Brando, who holds it all together. For that matter, the whole subplot involving Jean-Pierre Léaud is just ludicrous and reeks of Nouvelle-Vagueish nonsense. Even the sex stuff seems dated and gratuitous now, but in all his other scenes Brando makes it all fall into place somehow.
