A terminal "road-movie," Last Chants single-mindedly follows the path of its central character, Tom Bates, through an unspecified period of time as he talks to a hitch-hiker and then throws him out of his truck, visits his wife and has a fierce argument with her, talks to a man in a breakfast cafe, picks up a woman in a bar and has a one night stand with her... Jost uses his low-budget restraints to his advantage, sacrificing technical mastery for a docudrama-esque aesthetic which makes this film all the more engaging (and nostalgic). The long shots allow the audience to take in all the details of the sets, all of which appear very true-to-life and lived-in. The acting isn't the best, but the characters are strongly written, many of the exchanges of dialogue reveal classic road-movie archetypes (but not stereotypes).

An ultra low budget character study that stylistically subverts the realism of its awkward protracted conversations whilst also trying to give us insight in to this fiercely male character and in doing so explore both masculinity and also various things relating to the USA (particularly the media of the USA). At times intimate, sad, painful, disturbing. One very brief but horrid scene near the end lets it down slightly.

Kiarostami's Ten meets Fassbinder's Why Does Herr R. Run Amok? in this exceptional movie made for $2000, a naturalistic portrait of a deeply disturbed man. It is constructed out of several segments, long, often single-take scenes, each of which has Tom (played by Jandek lookalike Tom Blair) interacting with a single other person. Interspersed are bits of song, sometimes silence. An engaging early work from a woefully unsung auteur.
