Almost unbeatable if you're looking for a guilty, action packed and heavily tongue-in-cheek pleasure. Schwarzenegger is allowed to run riot thanks to the freedom from the plotline, earmarking the film as a self-parody of all popular action films from the period from the offset. It's like watching an unintentional comedy blend of the best and worst things from these action movies, thrown in with a lead which is a blend between John McClane and Duke Nukem. Very cheesy, but equally enjoyable.

Like Tony's Last Boy Scout, this is one the severely underrated gems of the 90s. The fact that this also operates like a confident homage to cinema -- from Hollywood action flicks to Bergman's Seventh Seal -- brings a truly moving statement about we all look for -- specially when we were kids -- in movies: we want to be sedated, taken to a place where everything is possible, thrilled and saved. And we don't want to come back to our dull lives, even knowing that it's staged and illusional.

a love letter to a dying genre by one of its finest directors, tying a joyful bundle of super-tropes and references that evoke melancholy for a passing era, while already hinting at action cinema in a time of transition. no more bulletproof wisecracking, time for bleak and realistic. mctiernan would soon enough vanish, while schwarzenegger would cling to trash (e.g. politics, expendables and terminator reiterations) to stay "relevant", just like most other 80s action heroes.

Arnold making fun of Arnold with one-liners and dumb gags up to eleven. But Arnold's performance makes the movie kind of charming. If only the meta ending wouldn't be mostly bad and the kid not such a smartass, this would be a perfect no brainer.

More clever than it's given credit for, but that kid should have been a bit older and more of an awkward action movie nerd instead of an insufferable wise-cracking tween.

Not as terrible as people say it is. It's not exactly inspired and some of the satire goes on way longer than it should but Arnold is just having fun with the genre that he helped turn mainstream.

Flawed movie, sure, but does in no way deserve its bad rep. Between the many MANY movie references, Shane Black's dialogue, watching straight shooter McTierman dabble with comedy, and one particular inspired Hamlet adaptation this is pretty sweet.

Great premise, memorable gags (Arnie Hamlet!), overqualified supporting cast, brought down a notch by focusing on the wisecracking kid. 30 years on, it feels more like it's his archetype that actually dies out, not the masculine action hero. Member how many 80's/90's movies had kids in leading roles? Then Toy Story happened.

This is good and I don't understand the poor reviews. It really is about 20 minutes too long, but I think this is a case of the film's reputation preceding. Conceptually, it's similar to plenty of other successful films like Tropic Thunder. I'd watch Arnold as Hamlet.

The exploding joke got a little tiresome. I wish they would have explored the unknown consequences of the action-world more, like when the helicopter was shooting at the inside of a building and the glass shot out the other side, falling on surprised people. But a really smart movie all-in-all that's actually hard to sell to your friends. "It's like an action movie, but not!" Easily Quentin Tarantino's best film.

This must be the definition of a guilty pleasure, I can't imagine what a boring, cynical life you (speaking to what seems like 90% of my top TCIs here) must lead if you watch this and manage to avoid enjoying it at least on some level. The only real drawback for me was the moderately annoying kid, who seems to be channeling Edward Furlong just a little. Charles Dance is a great cheese-villain.

The movie that breaks the boundaries of genre back and forth. It reminded me of recent film with Van Damme JCVD, when characters, in this case action movie heroes, shows self-awareness, and explains what it is like to be a poorly written character in a b-movie. After all it's us, movie lovers, who project ourselves onto characters that we see in movies. LAH takes its time to unwrap itself, but when it did it left a warm feeling in my heart and a big smile on my face.

Why does everyone bash this film so much? FWIW I think it does a fine job of mocking and emulating big silly action movies in general and Arnold's in particular. The rare 90s action blockbuster that still holds up decades later thanks to sheer spectacle, satirical smarts and complete commitment to the premise. Arnie, O'Brien and Dance are great. Watching this in HD is a treat for all the visual gags that were impossible to see before, and the photography is way above par for the genre. Really throws the kitchen sink in at the end (and yet both Meredith and Mom go missing), but the meaningful drama between the boy and his hero is still effective stuff.

More clever than the meat headed, one-liner spewing action films that it's commenting on. Irony is that Zak Penn wrote the original script to call out the hollywood excess of one-liners and the screenwriters that get played millions to write them, only to be rewritten by the same guys. Here's looking at you, Shane Black ;)

This is so far ahead of its time. A fantastic genre deconstruction, parody and sort of straight genre piece all at the same time, extremely meta, very funny, but also with genuinely excellent action scenes and a thought-provoking but easily understood examination of the transportative nature of cinema. Certainly the high point of Schwarzenegger's comedy efforts, and pretty high up the rankings for action too.

In retrospect, L.A.H signalled the decline of 80's action stars. Neither Arnie or Sly managed to captivate the masses in quite the same way after 93, and films like L.A.H were overblown recognitions that tastes were changing. The premise is sound--it's essentially the action equivalent of The Purple Rose of Cairo--but the script lacks wit and McTiernan was the wrong man for the job, despite his predictably deft handling of action. The meta aspects are also too cutesy and obvious.

This is a good action film. Given its billing, director, and title, that's a surprise. On the other hand, Last Action Hero works as an unexpectedly witty comedy. In fact, I found this movie to be more amusing than Schwarzenegger's two openly-billed comic entries, Twins and Kindergarten Cop.

I'm not entirely sure who the movie is for. The kid protagonist makes me think it's for pre-teens, but I'm not sure many would get most of the satirical jokes. Were there even any other jokes for them to enjoy? It's also pretty damn long for a moderately funny comedy with mediocre at best action. Either way I liked it more than I expected to.

Last Action Hero is another one of my several Arnold Schwarzenegger guilty pleasures. It had all the ingredients to be a success with 'Die Hard' & 'Predator' Director John McTiernan behind the camera. But sadly this was something of a flop. Regardless though I loved this film growing up. I loved the concept and all the parodic ideas. And there's fun cameos, easter eggs, AC/DC and signature Arnold moments. And surely it wasn't just me that wanted to watch the Jack Slater films within the film?

Last Action Hero is not just a self-referential hodgepodge of Hollywood in-jokes or a send-up of the action films that made its star famous. It's a personal encapsulation of what makes those kinds of movies so magical for boys, and a celebration of the joy of escapism, blessed with Shane Black's knack for winking wit. Basically, all Hamlet's missing is some uzis and cigars.

I preferred this film when I was a child because I didn't understand the satire, I just thought it was really fun. When re-evaluated though the satire's not that good now I 'get' it. And the action's not that good either considering they could have took it to comic book extremes given the plot of the film and all. The one Arnie film I liked as a kid, ruined now. Thanks a lot, brain.

A tremendously guilty pleasure and one for which I do not apologise. Arnold Schwarzeneggger's funniest and most clever role, this send up of action movies and the cliches they follow is repeatedly watchable and parodies everything that made him famous with gusto. Sadly coming out at a time when people weren't prepared for this kind of tonal shift in his work it did not do as well as it should have.

For a good 3/4 of its running time, LAH is an incredibly enjoyable parody of action films, playing up everything from corny one-liners to glaring plot holes, OTT explosions to invincible protagonists (with Arnie even having a number of digs at his own expense). Then when the characters return through the screen and you're expecting the realism to become relentless... it's more of the same. Just without the humour. A missed trick that results in a much weaker ending than this deserves.
