Larks on a String

Há 30 anos Andorinhas por um Fio finalmente estreava no Festival de Berlim, depois de ficar 21 anos proibido na Checoslováquia. Eu diria que apesar de ser um filme corajoso pela época em que foi feito, ele é muito "na sua cara", em tempos de repressão eu costumo gostar mais de filmes com alegorias sutis para passar pela censura, pois costumam serem dotados de uma inteligência superior, mesmo assim admiro este filme pela coragem de enfrentar o governo às claras. Harsh, and its wholly unsurprising that this was censored for decades. There are a few things I'd prefer were different, particularly in the pacing, but it still packs a punch while being solidly entertaining as is.

Sometimes I really think I see a lot of bad or average films and I feel depressed that I am spending my life for nothing. That's the reason why I rated this movie this high, because it made me feel good about everything - my time, being human, being able to love and hate and cry. Menzel's way of storytelling comprises of telling the big picture and small (folk's) story at the same time. If I'm overrating so be it, because that's why I see films, for running into stories like this.

I appreciate Menzel for having the balls to make this political satire of communist oppression back in 1969, endangering himself and dooming the film to 21 years of ban. However, it's pretty weak, certainly not among Menzel's best.
