Its placid waters complement the pristine Maine wilderness it borders. This tranquil setting is probably the last place you'd expect a gruesome fatality. But then it's also the last place you'd expect to find a 30-foot, narrow-snouted, multi-toothed, reptilian of the species Crocodylus. An eating machine more commonly known as a crocodile. Well, you can probably go and throw this 'big budget' B-movie 'fun' on the growing pile of evidence for the case of why I have such 'questionable' movie loving taste. As far as creature-features go, this movie is solid enough, where you're probably gonna run into problems with the movie is with all the hit-and-miss comedy, performed by the obnoxious collection of characters, sarcastically attempting 'witty' dialogue. You either laugh with/at the movie, or you want to punch the movie in the face.

Horrible, silly B-movie with extremely annoying performances by all of the leads. They are all so caustic, nasty, and horrible that you'll be rooting for the alligator. A comedy-horror with no comedic elements, only nastiness.

(Rewatch: RIP Betty White) I'm glad that there wasn't anything supernatural and we don't waste time with cheap jump scares or croc stalking people in the woods. The real gem is in the witty lines except for the female deputy (unaffected by Hector's "you have such big, wonderful boobs" or saying to him "if you get out I'll have sex with you"). Good chemistry b/w cast. Didn't feel like Maine but that's common; Bridget Fonda surprisingly condescending and out of touch w/plot. Fav scene: bear.

This movie would be complete B-movie fodder if it wasn't for the hilarious performances from Oliver Platt and Brendan Gleeson. They literally save this film in my books. Betty White, as well, is quite hilarious with her small amount of screen time. I normally don't like horror flicks but this movie has enough great laughs to keep you quite entertained. Sure the science is pretty goofy but it's a horror film so who cares.

This movie isn't what you'd expect from this genre. Loaded with comedy to go along with the fright and gore, you'll sometimes finding yourself laughing at the reactions of the people who are experiencing the terror of dealing with a 30 foot croc. Much better than anticipated.

Really cute characters & lots of funny lines make this a pleasure to watch. The thrills are okay but a larger human body count would have really been swell.

This movie is excellent and all the hate it gets is unwarranted! It's about a giant crocodile eating people in a lake, were you expecting Citizen Kane? It's funny, scary and campy, the actors all give engaging performances, and the gator effects by Stan Winston are exceptional, ESPECIALLY for 99! My biggest complaint is the low death count and that it ends pretty abruptly, robbing us of a proper third act final battle.

David E. Kelly brings some legitimacy to the film with his witty script. The main cast holds it together well. Especially Oliver Platt and Betty White. Overall though, the movie is pretty standard. Watchable but in the end pretty forgettable.

Dreadful. The only redeeming qualities of this film were a couple of tense scenes, some okay cgi, and meh Betty White one-liners. It was as bad as watching a commercial most of the time. The opening set the tone when the sheriff pulls in his literally half-eaten comrade and just looks emotionless in the distance. The dialogue was unintelligible and I was surprised how bad this film sank. I watched it to try to take advantage of Jordan's developing gatorphobia, but this couldn't even scare her.

The actors try their best with the material, Bridget Fonda, Betty White and Oliver Platt come off the best. However the script is lame and what should be an exciting film is rather boring. Definitely watch a better thriller like Jaws instead of this one.

An officer of Maine Fish and Game researching American beaver populations is scuba diving in Black Lake, Aroostook County, Maine, when he is savagely attacked and bitten in half by something unseen in the water. A tooth is found in the diver's remains and, as it appears to be a prehistoric fossil, a request is made for assistance to the Natural History Museum in New York City. The only thing this ultimately has going for it is its witty dialogue. The premise is old-hat by now and, coincidentally, is stunningly close to 1982's fellow horror-comedy, "Alligator." It may tickle your funny bone now and again, but not for long periods at a time; the only thing horrific about this movie is that Miner actually thought he was making a good movie.

Terrible. An embarrassment to the "vicious animal kills people" horror sub-genre. A total anti-climax, the movie ends right as it starts to get mildly interesting. Pretty weak finale that tries to have its cake and eat it too. Just lazy screenwriting in general. Not funny. Not scary. Not fun. Just awful. Betty White does her best, but this thing sucks.

It's a poorly acted with even poorer plot development and reasoning. It this huge quest to capture this giant alligator, but it's in a super small scale area, and it seems like there is no reason for all of the problems to be occurring. Lake Placid is hard to get a grasp of. It has an extreme "what's the point?" quality about it. We don't care about the characters, the inner human struggle is incomprehensible, and the alligator never really has it's time to shine. So what's the point in watching it?

Another movie is the long lne of horror movies involving animal predators, such as Anaconda and the myriad of movies you see on Sci-Fi Channel. This was unnecessary to say the least, unless Hollywood just felt like being thorough so reptile activists wouldn't feel left outof the picture. Bad.
