The janitor's story should have been the main plot

I didn't see this until I was older, but I imagine it would've been a blast as kid. Smart and scary, highly recommended!

Good mystery horror drama flick that is King meets Bradbury with a dash of fantasy.

A kids horror film that kids would hate. It's also kinda great at times?!?!

This has a very Ray Bradbury feel to it and it reminded me of a long Ray Bradbury Theater episode. The movie is too long and my attention started to wander at times.

The beginning sets up something promising, with the young protagonist being trapped inside after dark (on Halloween) with a ghost, but then it decides to have a heavy-handed moral about racism in the 60's while still trying to be a spooky ghost movie & none of it fits together at all. It's too long, too self-indulgent, too boring, & lacking in any characters worth caring about. I genuinely couldn't tell what it was trying to be- horror movie, murder mystery, what? It fails at being all of them.

A fairly forgettable ghost story. Not as creepy as it could have been.

Not bad for a coming of age horror/thriller. Which when you think of it that way is really not that good. :-)

A strange melange of the good, the bad, and the self-indulgent, this ranges from trite to pretentious to downright brilliant. It is at its best when LaLoggia applies a Val Lewton-like approach to his intricate fright material, powerfully conveying, via evocative writing and inspired imagery, a feeling of pervasive menace rolling just beneath the surface of Haas's small-town life -- a life outwardly normal but for death's frequent, irrational intrusions.

One of the few modern attempts at "quiet horror" that actually works. The scene where Frankie reads his new horror story to his elementary school class is priceless
