This was weird. Started out as a possible awesome James Cagney gangster movie, then they turned it into a wonderful spoof on Hollywood life with Cagney looking superbly ridiculous as a indian and monkeys crashing parties! And he got to have more fun with Mae Clarke playing off their grapefruit spot in The Public Enemy (1931) and bully her some more! Lady Killer is a movie that doesn't take itself very seriously which is why it's so great. Just a bunch of great actors having a blast!

One of those insignificant oldies. Cagney is charismatic as ever. Comic role didn't slow him down one bit. Once again he gets a chance to bully Mae Clarke. I loved her expression when the dialog brought up a grapefruit.

Fun and interesting kind of picaresque with an entertaining and versatile performance by Cagney, including some unusual touches for a romantic lead: he laughs like Paulie Walnuts, and for the same reasons. Deserves credit as one of the first features to draw such attention to cinematic artifice. Good self-reflexive gags that dance on the line between real and film life. Key precursor to NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK and THE ERRAND BOY (no bigger compliment, obviously).

A rollicking comedy about James Cagney's trajectory from cinema employee to petty crook to big-time criminal to movie star, and how these are all basically the same thing. Its willingness to veer off in new directions is totally admirable, and Cagney sells every new situation he's forced into.

Yet again: Cagney was great, story took way too long to do something

This movie contains another good performance by James Cagney. This is an interesting story, one that is over to fast. They could have come up with a better title, it doesn't really suit the film.

A delightful early gangster film with a lighthearted comedic flare throughout.James Cagney is giving a role and scenes that really shows off his immense talent very well. The only real downer was that the ending seemed a little rushed.
