Good stuff, but it felt kind of like watching a TV show a few seasons in without having seen the rest of it. But it was a good TV show.

Somewhat boring movie about firemen like Backdraft. The end was expected to be like that, no surprise for me.

In a Rudy Giuliani like fashion, it shamelessly cashes in on the emotions of 9/11. Time and time again. Cha-ching.

An excellent movie that shows the life of a fireman. It is a bit sad and depressing at times but I imagine it is what life is really like fighting fires. It definitely gave me an even greater appreciation for these heros.

Really really really bad. A film devoted to wrenhcing as many heatrstrings as possible, unashamedly making money out of the post 9/11 firefighter-frenzy. Don't feel guilty about hating it, it doesn't mean you had the NYFD...

Quietly affecting and well-crafted drama; somewhat elevates itself from genre doldrums by its specific, well-rounded characters: Phoenix is just about perfect charting a course from greenhorn to veteran, backed by a fine turn from Travolta as the more seasoned captain. Scenes of fiery mayhem quite tastefully handled, while still viscerally gripping; despite its largely unflinching honesty about the rigors and dangers of the job, it can't quite escape the whiff of PSA/recruitment video at times.

really, really mediocre in every aspect ... the way the story used flashbacks made it extremely boring and didn't allow any of the relationships to develop properly, the script was cheesy and the only interesting character (billy burke) died about half way through the film. It was watchable, but very uninteresting. You form no attachment to any of the characters.

MAN did they choose the wrong ladder ... up this one there's nothing but sickening American patriotism*, formulaic storytelling and at the end of it, Joaquin Phoenix's moody face. * I don't say that to dis Americans, you guys have good patriotism too! Check out Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for some great examples.

Really quite amateur filmmaking. Really bad characterization and acting. See Backdraft instead. It's at least decent and far more entertaining.

Schmaltzy, overly busy camera angles, confused dialogue and a lousy start. Plot exists but is not up to much. Too sentimental and designed to tug on the heart strings... Two lead performances are strong but deserve something better.

A tragic side-effect of 9/11 (in the world of entertainment) is the concept that you can say anything about a firefighter, and it'll be interesting. Ladder 49 is proof that this isn't the case.

Give me a break -- you don't get much sappier and more melodramatic that this ridiculous weeper about the heroic lives of firemen. I have already seen the definitive fireman movie -- "Backdraft" -- and there was no chance Joaquin Phoenix and John Travolta were going to top it. This film was a supreme letdown.

A standard heroic film about firefighters. It preaches its message a little too loud, but you can't say it's bad either, especially with solid performances from its two leads.
