La porta del cielo [The Gate of Heaven] (1945) might not be the perfect told story, but considering this is one of De Sica's lesser known early works, there are a lot of powerful scenes which lifts it up. A dark depressing mood with hints of hope shining through. With all the ways this was shot, you almost sense he was experimenting with finding his artistic touch. Considering how little exposure this movie has had, I'm sure fans of his more legendary movies will find this a viable supplement.
