A difficult film to really enjoy. Partly because at 2 hours it feels massively self-indulgent, partly because it takes so long to get going and explain where it's coming from. The younger actors were interesting, the depressed white man less so. But this is not a character film. It's 2 hours of sweaty post-colonial atmosphere and occasional scenes of lush cinematography (although I've never cared for dark interior shots). It has value. But fails to say its piece in a concise manner.

So dramatically inert and sleep-inducing, this languid adaptation of a Conrad novel is the kind of arthouse films I loathe.
