I had seen Josef von Sternberg's stunning Marlene Dietrich movie The Devil Is a Woman (1935), so it's interesting to see other adaptations of the source material. Here a silent 1929 French interpretation by director Jacques de Baroncelli. I'm not going to pretend it's anywhere near the Sternberg version. There was no way 18 year old Conchita Montenegro was going to live up to that standard, but she has her revealing moments too. Just not as sharp to eye as Dietrich looked in '35.
