La chasse au lion à l'arc

This is a powerfully confronting film not because the viewer has to witness many animal deaths, but because the viewer has to witness the death of many particular (i.e. singular) animals (each with a distinctive live force). This is possible because the film depicts, with impressive attention to detail, the process by which human hunters are present with non-human animals (at death) in an attempt to help these animals realise being-towards-death (the sole realm of Dasein).

Centered around a lion hunt and showing the rituals and beliefs of a tribe on the subject and structured with a loose narrative arc of progress and setbacks until the ultimate success the film is compelling enough, but what sets it apart, besides the great photography, is the openness with which the beliefs are shown and the lack of judgement involved. I have mixed feelings about hunting, but I appreciate this open, detailed and informative look at the practice in a traditional context.
