An indifferent melodrama (you can see the whole thing coming about five minutes in), with very good cinematography. Even early on, Tourneur stands out as being obviously particular about where to position people on camera, timing their movements, having them move towards or away from the camera for effect, etc.

A minor work from an exceptional silent director. Compositionally bolder than Griffith or Ince, and with a subtle tenderness that anticipated the poetic realists.
