Marion Cotillard's act is stunning! it still occupied my soul.

I remember Cotillard as pretty convincing and the story as allright. But my memory isn't treating this film with much more than that and then the "pretty good"-feeling. I need something really convincing in these portrait-films, and honest; we rarely get that.

I couldn't get into Piaf's music, which I think was the main reason I didn't get into the film so much.

30/10/09. Technically, very good. Cotillard, superb. Script and direction, dreadful. A very well polished film, just from an unsalvageably poor and messy foundation. Disappointing over all.

Just like Last King of Scotland a year earlier, this otherwise decent movie is made good by a brilliant leading performance.

What makes this film good is the extraordinary performance of Marion Cotillard, and the eventful life that she is portraying. Unfortunately, though the movie shows a fascinating story, the film itself is not. Still a good movie if you like Edith Piaf and want to know a bit more about her life!

Stellar costumes and make up, without a doubt, and Marion Cotillard's performance is positively stellar. However the film focuses entirely on the downside of Edith Piaf's life. Even after becoming successful it only focuses on the negative aspects of well... everything. It just makes the film feel over-the-top due to endless negativity. Surely there must have been 20 minutes of positive things in Edith Piaf's life that could've been shown.

Le plus fantastique histoire que les françaises poudraient ecrire sur leur meilleure chanteuse! Bravo aussi pour Marion Cotillard, grand actuation.

It seems a bit distractedly put together and it's hard to follow the flow of the story. However, the last half of the movie works quite well and gets you involved. Cotillard's acting is some of the best I have ever seen, and is probably the best part of the movie. Not perfect and could be a lot better. Worth a watch though.

Excellent makeup, costumes, art direction and cinematography can't save this mess of a movie. The script and direction are so flawed that all that's left is a very effectist story about Piaf. Cotillard is very good, though a little over the top at times.

Perhaps Cotillard's broad, hammy, relentlessly aggravating (and highly acclaimed) performance as the French icon is indeed spot-on. If so, her acting may be basically accurate but is so off-putting in its affectations that it should have been toned down, reality be damned. Dahan assembles the film with an ungainly stateliness and throws in a few pointlessly portentous tracking shots just to show he's got technical acumen to spare. I would have preferred heartfelt, thoughtful and subtle.

Marion Cotillard is such a natural force here. She carries the movie and brings the story of Edith Piaf to life. It's a tragic, sad story of a great artist. Sometimes skipping in time didn't sit that well with me, but I guess it worked in the sometimes chaotic vein of the story itself. I just didn't particularly enjoy being left wanting for a continuation of a story before skipping to a different time and then backtracking to the first or second thing later.

A committed performance is hobbled by poor direction and an unwise structure. Great costumes and the music is, of course, marvellous, but one doesn't get much of a handle on Piaf from this messy film.

One gets the impression this conventional rags to riches, rise and fall narrative has been fractured into pieces in an attempt to hide how basic the story-arc is. Unfortunately, this move did nothing but make what might have been a good movie a complete mess. The script gave me a headache starting about halfway in. The best moments are when Edith Piaf is singing on stage, and Marion Cotillard, always good, definitely kills it. BUT THATS NOT ENOUGH, OLIVIER DAHAN.

I wanted to like this film more than I did. I'm a big fan of melodramatic, rags to riches, showbiz type movies and this movie did have all that. Marion Cotillard is fantastic and Edith Piaf is certainly an interesting character study, but the film itself I found a little too disconnected. There was no real story arc and therefore it never truly reached the climactic moment I wanted it to reach. Surely Piaf's life was not as entirely depressing as the film depicts either?

"Edith Piaf's tidal emotional vulgarity and brutish commitment to the most sentimental chansons is captured accurately and even irresistibly in La Vie En Rose." - Dan Callahan

The following things are true. I liked Marion Cotillard a lot in this movie. I liked that girl who played Edith Piaf as a child even more. I thought the music was alright. I mean, I like that kind of music broadly, but this specifically wasn't really my thing. But whatever. Somehow, amongst liking these things, the movie felt pretty conventional. Kind of like every other biopic ever. Even structurally. The only thing that sets it apart are those two performances that I liked.

Even at 2+ hours parts of this film feel rushed, and in my mind there seemed to be huge gaps in the story of her life. However it's carried across any weak spots by a simply spellbinding portrayal of Edith Piaf by Marion Cotillard. The visuals are lavish and matched by some excellent cinematography. The music is wonderfully used too, but really this is a must-see just for the lead performance.

Marion Cotillard is a chameleon in this role, and absolutely deserved the Best Actress Oscar. I was skeptical before seeing this, but now I definitely see why she won. The movie itself is good, but the nonlinear structure doesn't always seem to have the clearest narrative.

An examination of a tragic life raised to levels of beauty by moments of sublime montage as well as the film's centerpiece: a fantastic long-take shot that captures the movie as a whole in a single sequence.

What a mess. It's 'only' two and a half hours long, but it felt twice as much. How about a real script and a director who actually knows what he is doing. Performance by Cotillard is stellar, and only she makes this film tolerable.

Fabulous, unbelievable, sad story of Edith Piaf, one of the best singers in France during and after world war II. One can not believe that this sad movie is a true story ! My favourite songs : "La vie en rose", "Non, je ne regrette rien" and "Padam padam".

This movie is about 30-45 minutes too long. But the best actress oscar was well deserved as Cotillard puts on a performance so over the top, it could only compare to the likes of Jack Nicholson as the Joker, or Tom Hulce as Amadeus. Come to think of it, someone should come out with a sequel in the AVP mold, Amadeus vs. Edith Piaf. Who could out-crazy the other?

I've enjoyed Piaf's music since a very young age so what I got in return was a best of both worlds film, with on one hand an engaging biopic full of rousing music and on the other a potent drama dominated by a sublime Cotillard who single-handedly made me laugh and nearly brought me to tears; Without a doubt one of all time favorite performances and a fine film.

Olivier Dahan was obviously very ambitious, but I think the film falls short more than once. What saves it from being just "decent" is Cotillard's performance, which is amazing to watch. And of course, Edith Piaf's singing is simply magical. If you're not a fan before seeing "La Mome", you'll be afterwards.

Seems to lose focus with all of the flashbacks, but it all comes together in the last half of the film. Mdm. Cotillard is amazing in her role.
