La Sortie des usines Lumière
1895
Documentary
Short Film

The 'plot' is outlined by the title: the film consists of a single shot of workers leaving the Lumiere factory, and the film would be of virtually no interest (except to students of late 19th century clothing) were it not for the fact that it was the first film ever to be projected to a paying audience, and is consequently one of the most important films in the history of the cinema (imdb)

There's just something somehow beautiful about shorts like this... these little pieces of time that have been preserved for over a century, and will be preserved, presumably, for as long as there is a humanity

Interesting as a piece of motion-picture history, or as a brief glimpse into late 19th century France. However, with that said, rating these historically significant shorts is difficult. Although not exactly boring, I wouldn't exactly call this actuality riveting. Well, that is of course outside of the dog. Here we see the first instance of the charismatic dog stealing the show from a less than stellar film. Who cares about these people and their droll lives, what's up with that dog?

Impossible to review objectively. It's boring from a modern viewing, of course, but it's the first movie, so it's kind of the great-great-great-great grandfather of Scorsese and Woody Allen and Spielberg and Kurosawa and Kubrick and Tarantino and Hitchcock and James Cameron and Chris Nolan and Sergio Leone and Eastwood and Orson Welles and Michael Mann and the Coen brothers, so I can't really say "IT SUUUCKS!!", can I?

Can't be rated subjectively; in 1895, this would be a stunning masterpiece; after the creation of editing and plot, it's just a boring shot of people walking. Still, it's a historical artifact, and there is some interest in watching people from a time so far removed from the modern day. Good to know dogs always chased after bikes, too.

One wonders what all those workers were hired to do, exactly. Marketing, presumably.

" it was the first film ever to be projected to a paying audience," Oh dear, they payed for this? That's kind of a rip-off. Not the most boring movie I've ever seen, you see people walking. Good choreography!

Important moment in the medium of film-making, but of course not a piece of art by any definition. Still, as a film fan, it's nice to see this bit of history. I find it very neat to think how 115 years ago, the motion picture made it's first step from new experimental technology to the extremely important medium of art it is today. Also, PeaceAnarchy has never gone people-watching before.

An important moment in history, noted as the first ever real motion picture made. The dog that turns up briefly IS the star of the show, though.

People watching is a lot more entertaining than you would think, but this film still doesn't maintain interest after the first 2 or so minutes. Still, its importance supercedes most of its boring aspects. Any film buff should watch it once.

This is actually really interesting as a study of human behaviour. Notice how some people turn left and others right, but at certain points when one side peters out everyone follows the lead until someone decides to break new ground. There are so many people that I could watch this all day and keep noticing different little things like this.

Exiting the Factory, one of its titles in English, is considered the first movie in the history of cinema shown to a paying public audience. It is worth watching for its historical importance, but it lacks no artistic value. The movie is in the public domain, you can watch it for free: https://youtu.be/I-peG1HA_TE

Look at all those factory workers, leaving after a days hard work in their everyday clothes, walking with totally normal postures, trying not all to catch as much camera as possible :)... :(. Funny, tragic and very rich document. [insert unsubstantial, crappy comment about film starting in a factory here].

Pretty important since it was the first film ever produced in the world. Besides that, at 40 seconds long, it's too short and unbearably slow. Go see it anyhow.
