Kassovitz has created what is now one of my all-time favourite films; a stark, shocking and realistic portrayal of life in the Paris slums seen through the eyes of three racially different young men who are changed by the decaying society and end up in a battle for their lives. It's brilliant and strangely intriguing, I highly recommend this to everyone. It's a film which we all should see whether politics is relevant to us or not for it's a lesson learned in terms of ethics and morality.

Kassovitz wears his influences quite plainly on his sleeve... this film is dripping with Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese references. As derivative as it is, however, it does have a certain freshness (or perhaps FRENCHness) that makes it more than a copycat picture. I found that I cared about the three main characters without actually liking them very much, which I guess is a neat trick. It's awfully funny listening to people try to sound all badass in French, though.

A cop loses his gun during a riot in a Parisian ghetto, and it is found by a group of teens whose friend was put into a coma by a police officer. Vincent Cassel is ragetastic as a seething ball of directionless anger and attitude, and the sudden, unexpected ending leaves a powerful impression. However, one struggles to escape the feeling that French guys calling each other "homeboy" is deeply silly somehow.

If it wasn't for baby Cassel you could've told me this movie was made last year and I would've believed it. It's the least subtle use of Chekhov's Gun principle I think I've ever witnessed, but it's no less impactful.

This picture is up there with Do the Right Thing, Boyz in the Hood, and Menace II Society in terms of "hood films"--narratives that merge hip-hop's urban stories with the auteur approach of indie film. Kassovitz deserves kudos as a writer and director, as he makes these characters not political caricatures, but young people learning to deal with a world they inherited. The message is still relevant as police brutality, anti-black racism, and Islamophobia run amok around the globe. A classic.

This movie has been on my list for a while, but I had no idea what it was about. I coincidentally picked an interesting day to watch it, just after the Dallas police shootings. The story is a little meandering at times, but there's an underlying current of tension that keeps it pushing forward. It took me just a little bit to get invested in the characters, but it's really fantastic once you do. Not to mention the direction is excellent.

Shot in gorgeous B+W film, this movie presents us with three main characters who are raw, incredibly vibrant portrayals of humanity living in turbulent times. It reminds me a lot of Do The Right Thing, but I feel as though this film presents a much more complex viewpoint than Spike Lee's picture in terms of how hate is bred. In La Haine, hate seems to have no beginning and no end; it just cycles endlessly and serves as an all too easy crutch for these characters as they try to find themselves.

Complex and intriguing as well as voraciously intelligent. I can't quite put my finger on what stopped this being truly great in my opinion, perhaps it was the slightly loose plot? I can applaud its restless style, and there are standout scenes, but deep down La Haine is just piggybacking on Tarantino and Spike Lee. I can feel it in every ounce of its testosterone and talk. If the movie were better, I would look past it. There is no one to like or really even identify with, even though there are opportunities to humanize these characters and their conditions. Three hoodlums act like hoodlums, and that's about it for a plot. Don't play with guns, kids.

Kassovitz might have created a more compelling story if the characters encouraged a sympathetic response from his audience. Perhaps this is part of the point, part of his commentary of the contemporaneous society, but as it stands I'm tempted to say "let it fall."

Meandering tale of Parisian street life is almost distractedly dated in its film-making style 20 years on - one can feel the lo-fi, post-Tarantino 90s feel in every fibre of its being. Energetic performances from its three leads do their best to inject some energy into the aimless, wandering narrative which often overreaches in its at times surrealist digressions, leading to a somewhat cheap and unearned nihilistic finale. Cassel proves he is (and was) a talent to watch.

Uneven, but generally very good. Occasional stylish camerawork aside, maintains a beautiful gritty realist tone throughout, which is just why the plot seems jarringly forced and almost didactic at points, such as in the final scene. Definitely peaks in the bathroom scene about halfway in, where a diminutive old Gulag survivor memorably tells the protagonists his shaggy dog tale about his friend Grunwalski. I recommend the film but it could have done with a little less social self-importance.

This film had so much firepower. It is an offbeat (yet excellent) study on friendship and humanity within a volatile sociopolitical landscape. Magnificently shot, powerfully acted and with some (occasionally oversold) social insights as well, "La haine" creates a relatable, realistic story out of some familiar settings and potentially unsympathetic characters. I actually enjoyed the quiet moments better (the old man's monologue at the john being the highlight) and I would have preferred if they had ignored Chekov there at the end, but that's not to say that the final 2' aren't memorable. Just a little obvious as point-making.

Apes a lot of Spike Lee and a lot of Martin Scorsese, but does it with a sort of youthful abandon which kinda reflects well on the film. Very well shot and doesn't let up at all in its rawness and intensity. Some scenes were a little ridiculous but overall, the anger and angst filling every dialogue and every scene was more than enough to move the story forward and keep me engaged. Thematically, this movie reminded me of a documentary I saw recently called Dragonslayer. The big differences are that this movie isn't about skateboarding, is urban instead of suburban, and this movie isn't a miserable failure. Kassovitz allows the tension to simmer like a master, letting it escalate just below the veneer of the laidback and aimless '90s (encapsulated in Richard Linklater, Larry Clark, and Kevin Smith films) until it has nowhere to go but up. During this film I felt at times the urge to laugh, yet at the same time what I was seeing disturbed me. This portrayal of three friends in the Parisian border effectively showed the hatred and the tension in the 90's between the police and the youngsters, as well as between the youngsters themselves. This is a very good film about the "bad" side of Paris. Beautifully done technically, strong performances inhabiting interesting, real characters. I thought it kind of lost focus starting midway through before gaining it back toward the end. The simmering tension of that part of the city just waiting to explode at the right provocation reminded me of Do The Right Thing, though I didn't think the payoff was terribly satisfying, or at least was smaller in scale than I expected. For all the building it did the ending not only felt unjustifiable, but unsatisfying and unnecessary considering the power a simple Bressonian arrest would have had. It is with lack of empathy and imagination we talk about crimes in these demographics and areas, and this tale could have served as symbol for all those behind the stats. Rather than stressing and pursuing naturalism in the front and cyclicism in the back, it chose dramatization in the end, undercutting the whole thing.

Mathieu Kassovitz's portrait of racial and class tensions in present-day France isn't really all that different from plenty of American films on the same subject, but Kassovitz's punchy direction (which won an award at Cannes), and powerful performances from Vincent Cassel, Hubert Koundé, and Saïd Taghmaoui make it worthwhile.
