La Cravate

A profoundly ugly film about being yourself. Hooray, I guess. El Jodo had a straight-up humble beginning.

I had exceptionally low expectations for Jodorowsky's long-lost debut film, but it's actually a rather effective bit of pantomine. The staginess of it is not a drawback at all, in fact it lends a certain charm. A dash of light surrealism hints at things to come, and the colors are striking. Not a major work, but a pleasant one.

Purely the work of an amateur, but it does have a charm to it. Odd to see Jodorowsky's name on something G-rated.

This isn't bad once you understand the significance of what is actually going on in relation to the story it was based on. Seeing a young Jodo is worth it alone.

Kind of cute, but ugh, mime.

Interesting short that's worth watching. There's an excitement in this silent film's use of visual metaphors to begin with, but later in the film it all becomes rather muddled and confused with itself. Still, nothing to lose your head over.

Jodorowsky is right in that it is amateurish, but that there's also a great deal of talent behind it. It's clear this is the man who would go on to make El Topo.

utterly adorable. this is how you make a debut film: it stands out like nothing else.

Definitely creative and charming debut from Jodorowsky. I have a slight problem with it since I involuntarily find all mimes to be somehow suspicious. No I can't explain it better.
