The director of "The Smiling Madame Beudet" works from a scenario from Antonin Artaud to create what is arguably the first surrealist film, beating "Un Chien Andalou" to the screen by a year. It's appealing, but lacks that's film's fiery provocativeness. Artaud apparently hated what was done with his scenario and publicly cursed the film and Dulac, but he was not the easiest man to get along with.

This was a weird, trippy, and fun little movie.

"Pure cinema", also known as headfuckery. Someone must have shown this to both Bergman and Lynch as kids.

So full of beauty and mystery it's impossible for it all to stick in one viewing.

A general (newly emerging bureaucrat class) takes the power of clergy (he takes the seashell which also has erotic conntations), after that the clergyman gets annoyed and has sexual frustrations and fantasies about the general's wife, the black-and-white squares of the border in the house and the dream structure as the revelation of desire remind me of Lynch and/or Kubrick. Great vision and invention.

fun, surreal nonsense about a scientist-looking dude and an aristocrat-looking dude who are inevitably destined to be enemies. haha, that's not what it was about at all. oh well.

Really cool visuals and the version I saw had a solid soundtrack too, but it was hard to stay focused even with all that. Still enjoyed the experience.

"If this film has a meaning, it is doubtless objectionable."
