there were some really lovely scenes, which made up for the overwhelming amount of characters and subplots. plus louis garrel is fooiiine.

Christophe Honoré is the future of French cinema.

I love the actors but this just wasn't it.

A tad less stylish and distinctive than other Honore films (although to be fair, there is still a gay subplot and one musical sequence), it's still all-around a very solid piece of work. Honore's tendency to be a bit schematic and plotty is certainly in full effect, interestingly used here to almost Rohmer-esque ends. It's probably no truer to my own teenage experiences than a Larry Clark film, but at this point in my life anyway i certainly prefer watching these rich kids' problems.

As Nick Drake sings, Honoré creates a coming of age story that feels like Junie -- fragile, lovely and ultimately both prosaic and deeply interested in human emotions. There is such a careful way to depict teens here that the only musical scene wraps a suicide of the shy, passionate Otto, the only one that, as Junie tells her italian teacher, will have ever loved his whole life. Almost every supporting character or subplot also looks genuine. Beauty is stunning, mysterious and often dangerous.

Ugh.

Christophe Honore is a hack. This one was particularly bad. I didn't bother to rate the unbelievably bad "ma mere" or dans Paris. If he is the heir to the new wave, then they threw the apple as far from the tree as possible.

Beautiful youths feeling deeply.

C'est bien. Mais la fin n'est pas tres heureuse.
