Elimdeki kötü kopyadan izlediğimde çok sevdiğim, ancak film festivalinde temiz kopyasından izlediğimde aşık olduğum film. İstanbul'u seviyorsanız muhakkak izleyin.

Apart from showing the magnificence of the old İstanbul it was one of the most boring films I have ever seen in my life. I also felt using the "oriental touch" in the movie was too exaggerated. The exotic, the mysterious, the forbidden woman stuck in İstanbul and stuck in the man's dream, hmmm.

A dense mental labyrinth of self-loathing and destructive l'amour fou. It may also be a ghost story. The shock edits, the discord between sound and image, and image against image, tell us there is an unspoken code of violence being perpetrated in stillness and silence - it's beautiful stuff.

-----"Last Year at Istanbul"----- loved every piece of it. jump cuts, laps and freeze of time and memory, invasive exterior sounds, the use of music, 60's wardrobe, reverie quality, ambiguous and uncanny story, repetitions, lovely "oriental", "exotic" Istanbul, looked by Western gaze but coming out as if directly from Orhan Pamuk's memoirs of the locals

Subtract from "Marienbad" its relentless formalism and you have a blank reel of film, or so I would've assumed. However, R-G manages to produce a film of similar effect, viz. a dreamish, labyrinthine, nicely photographed evocation of temporality, and especially memory and imagination, and how, in an epistemological mindfuck, the former is necessarily manufactured via the latter. That I've ranked this below LYAM is both because the latter is formally superior, and simply a matter of taste.
