Benning's films are a balm for my soul. In their unassuming, unpretentious simplicity, his compositions provide such a fertile field (no pun intended), out of which spring acute feelings of nostalgia, solitude, and - of course - the passing of time. Here, he toys with duration as well, telescoping the film's timeline so that, when night falls, the sun isn't far around the bend.
