When a bunch of rival biker gangs form a loose alliance, it ignites a war with a rebellious splinter group of hellraisers. Bristling with infectious energy and feral intensity, ever threatening to boil over with testosterone and motor oil. The chaotic fight scenes are clearly influenced by Fukasaku, but this flick has its own unique visual style and some impressive camera work. Reckless enthusiasm and jaded nihilism never meshed so wonderfully. Note to self: see more Sogo Ishii films.

One can easily name off the film's clear progeny: Miike, Otomo, Kitano, Anno, Tsukamoto, Sono, Kurosawa, Yukisada. And it's easy to see why. From its opening moments, its raw, unrestrained, angsty energy is viral, and ultimately, its primary theme. Yet despite the pedigree it inspired and left in its wake, Crazy Thunder Road is its very own stray and rabid dog, and ultimately a sensation, requiring Western rediscovery.

A stylish and gutsy punk rock movie. Guy sure knows how to get all the angles. The plot strews chaos throughout, unintelligible mess of strange characters with random motivations. Great soundtrack you can bro down with.
