It had some of the same characters from Shaolin Soccer, which just makes it that much harder NOT to compare the two films. KFD pales in comparison in just about every aspect of the movie- the comedy is lame, the romance is almost non-existent, and the wuxia is less played up. The wire-fu is just about the same, though I admit to liking SS more in this respect because I just like soccer better as a sport. I had to really convince myself not to fast forward during some scenes.

here's a great example of a film that doesn't have a heartbeat. it's not perhaps technically inept, but it is devoid of originality. it plays mostly like a cliche, boring sports film and does little with its "kung fu" aspect. and when it does, it doesn't meld the two -- they are either playing basketball with high jumps or they are fighting ... but never quite fighting at basketball. to sum up, don't try to make a stephen chow movie if stephen chow is to have zero involvement.

I watched this in exactly the right mood to enjoy the parts of this film I should have hated. The movie clearly has an idea what's going on - within half an hour a character gives a speech making fun of the movie's own premise - but it's never winking at the audience, just embracing all the goofy aspects of a kung fu orphan playing wuxia basketball on a team with a man who has been drunk ever since losing to The Evil Team two years ago. I didn't like this ironically, I genuinely enjoyed myself.
