Well, what was all that for? This movie was crying out for M. Night's trademarks--crazy twists, unsettling imagery, claustrophobic suspense--but they just never arrived. For a movie about the end of this world, this was way too small potatoes.

It needed a twist, any twist. Ironic, really, that we don't get one out of M. Night. Most of the film is actually decent as it builds up pressure. But the apocalyptic elements lack fear and gusto. Overall I'm not sure if it was worth watching but not bad.

I like this more than Old. Shyamalan's directing is solid. The writing isn't bad. Bautista put on a really endearing performance. There's a part of me that respects that the twist is that there isn't one. But I'm disappointed because, despite the good, it all comes across as very milquetoast. That's basically because of the plot. You know exactly what's going to happen really early and then it just kind of goes through the motions until it ends. The premise is cool but there's no oomph .

They're something off about Knock at the Cabin. I'm not sure the film would have been better had it adapted the bleaker ending from the novel, but the way it plays out is just unsatisfying. Shyamalan focuses all his energy into framing every scene and shifting the camera focus between characters that it almost feels intentional though without payoff. Aldridge's Andrew is too dislikeable for the film to work. The high-points were when characters were 2nd guessing themselves.

A genuinely pleasant surprise from a director I'd more or less completely given up on (I'm still mystified by the way 'Split' was seen as a return to form). The ending is kind of a fumble, especially compared to the much more audacious novel — one wonders if there was some trepidation about sending a certain kind of message — but all in all it's a competent, understated supernatural drama with clear ethical stakes in the style of the more straightforward 'Twilight Zone' episodes.

Like a lot of Shyamalan’s previous work, Knock at the Cabin has a very interesting premise filled of ambiguity. It’s interesting enough to keep your attention through the heavy exposition and slow pace. However, there just isn’t much to really take from it. Its ending is rather anticlimactic, and doesn’t really deliver much of the Shyamalan’s schtick. Leaving a lot of this to feel pretty straight forward when it seems there could be so much more, and because of that, this feels forgettable.

A home invasion horror flick, inverted, remixed with a dash of Red State and, bizarrely, Tarkovsky's The Sacrifice makes for a great premise. And the first half of the movie is highly compelling despite the bad acting, cheesy flashbacks and nonsensical plot holes. But then comes the bad CGI and a plot arc that caters shamelessly to the new cult of American apocalyptic evangelists. What's next on Shyamalan's creative docket, a movie that asks what if Nazis are actually nice people? Gross.

There are some great performances, especially from Dave Bautista, but I simply could not work up any interest in this scenario. If the family had been a little less blissfully happy, maybe there would have been real tension about what was going to happen. If we had just quickly moved to everyone accepting the truth of the scenario, maybe the group vs individual morality discussion would have been interesting.

I really wanted to like this movie. Sadly, I'm afraid Shyamalan has long lost his ability to craft a tightly-written and directed film. The plot meanders, has inexplicable holes, and inevitably doesn't have the emotional impact I wish it did. And that's sad because the performances in this are powerhouse. Bautista is wholly empathetic as the film's pseudo-villain and the trapped couple present some truly heartbreaking moments. Should have been so much better than it was.

One imagines that the filmmakers thought this sounded like a cool idea, but once you get past the stage of figuring out the set-up, there's not much going on to keep the viewer interested as it plays out. The contrived premise is slightly reminiscent of THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER, but where that film seemed to be about something, this one is really about nothing. I don’t understand the title: combining a knock at the door with a cabin in the woods – shouldn’t it be “a knock at the cabin door”?

The family was cute, but the disaster parts felt very cheap and faked, pushing the movie into B movie and The Asylum category over and over again every time it was meant to be scary. A film that requires the viewer to take something of a leap of faith to engage with – if you’re able to connect with its fairly superficial spiritual ideas and message, you may get more enjoyment from it, but its sedate, sleepy pacing (and possibly most benign depiction of home invasions and murder ever to grace the silver screen) makes this an overall dull effort, even if the performers (especially Bautista) deliver their empty platitudes with conviction. And what’s the point of it all exactly?

My affection for Dave Bautista grows! :) Waffling back and forth with the family over what to believe held my attention spectacularly, and I liked how the final decision played out. The scene in the truck with the radio afterward was cute. I'm realizing that this could easily have been a movie where the reality was left ambiguous, but I'm thankful to be able to assure prospective viewers that it was not.

While it does have a fantastic core performance from Bautista, the film itself falls to the conventional wisdom of the genre. It plays all the cards in order to build tension, leaving the final act devoid of the very thing they attempted to build. There was no other way this film ends and that took away the tension from the scenes meant to invoke the most emotion.

The ending of the book is actually dark and it would be much more effective if it was used, but I think the ending used in the movie was not bad either. The acting and emotional transitions were great, it was extremely gripping and intriguing for a one-location apocalyptic movie. My complaint about the film is that I wanted to feel the magnitude and destructiveness of the events, but it did not happen. Although I had a good time, I think this adaptation has its shortcomings.

Watching M. Night Shyamalan films are always such a confusing process, but I'd say Knock at the Cabin (2023) is one of the better. There is enough shining moments, emotion even, to make-up for the corny stuff that was happening. The little girl and big Bautista were key to grabbing my attention. Enjoyable like all Shyamalans hokum, but as a viewer i was not fully engaged because there was never real doubt about whether the dilemma was real or not. You know it's real and you know how it's going to end. An approach like The Man Fom Earth works better because you're pingponged between believing and not believing and the thought experiment is interesting. I'm also always kind of irked by Groffs acting. Something about his diction and face makes me feel like he's a wuss.

Remember "The Great and Terrible Day of the Lord"? Of course not, I might be the only person who saw it. Anyway, this is that movie done well. MKS has "explored faith" so much, it's hard to believe him when he says he isn't religious, but what's really central to this particular movie is how good Dave Bautista is. It pokes some subtle fun at some culture war stuff, and most notably, it's an MKS movie without his "what a twist"-i-ness. Probably my favorite non-Eastrail 177 content he's ever made.

Pros: A half hour after leaving the theater, I still had no idea how I felt about the movie. Performances are good, sometimes very good, and the characters and especially emotions do feel very compelling. Cons: For something that derives tension out of purposeful lack of clarity, the ending is a terrible left turn. There's a plot point and revelation that made me feel queasy and leaned exploitative. Things peter out at the end. It was a compelling and fascinating watch, though.

One of the best films Shyamalan has ever made. Wrenching, tense, and probing. Incredibly shot (as is so often the case for Shyamalan's work) and pointedly defying the kind of claustrophobia other filmmakers typically evoke from single-location stories. Dave Bautista is fantastic here. This has its inevitable Shyamalanisms, but I'm willing to pay that price for the work of such an exciting filmmaker in the most adventurous period yet of his career.

It's actually more about hope and sacrifice -- as a read in a great review, "an unbearable hope" -- than it is about faith. Like in Old, Shyamalan directs the shit out of this material and manages to shock and leave us in both despair and in disbelief, only to bring everything together through his always arresting dedication to the things we can only imagine and dream of.

Shyamalan's "Knock at the Cabin" is a high-concept film that explores the difficult dilemma of sacrificing a family member to save the world. Although the film raises important questions, it fails to fully address them and instead backs away from the topic. The themes of family and parenthood are central to Shyamalan's work, but in "Knock at the Cabin" they are limited in their impact. However, Bautista's performance as Leonard, a mix of sincerity, madness, and terror, should be praised.
