Makes for an interesting contrast with contemporaneous Hollywood historical epics, which were transitioning into a more self-aware style - Krzyzacy is much more square than LAWRENCE OF ARABIA or SPARTACUS but more lurid as well, and the production scale is nearly as impressive.
