Kite

Since i didn't like the anime and i apparently didn't like myself either i decided to see what this was like almost entirely based on sam Jackson being in it. Its very mundane, but isn't desperately trying to be more than it is like the anime so i liked it better. It has a very strong 90s dystopia feel from the direction to the palette and the soundtrack...reminded me of the vibe from the crow sequels.

Kite is violent and controversial -- and the uncensored cut has never been released in America. It's been adapted into a relatively safe and not particularly interesting movie about a teenage girl trying to seek revenge on the awful person/people who killed her parents several years earlier. It doesn't have good action, it doesn't have good dialogue, it's not shot particularly well, and nobody in the movie seems to care a whole lot about anything within it. Kite isn't worth your time.

Haven't seen the anime this is based on but I'm assuming this is mostly a straight lift bc of how utterly narratively empty it is. Like alot of anime there's an attempt at pretentious/cryptic imagery in order to give the impression there's something profound going on. But the characters are flat, & the structure of the narrative is repetitively tiresome (she fights, flees, talks to boy, talks to Jackson, repeat). The fight scenes are okay but presumably this is all much "cooler"-looking as anime

Samuel L. Jackson likes anime. So much, he did not say no to this. That they stretch a 50 minute OVA to a 90 minute movie with the same story can only work against the movie. I thought it was watchable, but I had seen two better movies of the same caliber immediatly before watching this so, I probably didn't pay to much attention to the lack of quality.

Look I love Samuel L Jackson, but he couldn't do anything for this. I know that this movie is supposed to be heavily stylized but it just doesn't work for the most part. All of the acting, barring Jackson who was uninspiring here, sucks. Even the plot that was supposed to be based on source material, betrays it ( a story I thought was alright anyway). What didn't need a live action reboot got one, and did id all wrong.

It's stylish, I'll say that. Given the source material, it's probably a case of style over substance. Sawa's outfits end up somewhere between sexy and goofy. The most obvious comparison to make here is to "Sucker Punch". While I did not love the main character, the visuals, the soundtrack, the story OR the style presented here nearly as much as I did with "Sucker Punch", I can still mostly appreciate what it's TRYING to do. The action is not great, though. I'm too soft on trashy genre flicks.

I knew this was going to be bad but Oh My God. This was one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time and that's saying something.The source material was fast paced and pretty fun but this was just boring. Bad directing, horrible acting and amateurish editing with no fun to be had.

Solid action and an interesting story more than make up for the slightly unpolished finish.

Kite desperately wants to be another Dredd (2012). Like, not even subtly so. That said, while it never quite reaches the same highs, it's a pretty goddamn solid little action movie, and a lot better than I expected given the (astoundingly awful) source material.
