I think the idea that inspired this whole movie was "spotted dick LOL."

The parts that were good, were really really good. And I liked the entire cast, and the scenery and cinematography and all that. But there were far too many cringeworthy, over-the-top moments. Like all the musical numbers, and the parts where John Goodman attempts physical comedy and just ends up looking uncomfortable and clumsy (which is basically the entire movie). He has a lot of strengths as an actor, both comedic and dramatic, but this movie is practically a showcase of his few weaknesses.

I remember watching this movie as a kid because there was promise of nudity. There were likely better choices out there.

 I hate to say it, but John Goodman deserves better than this.

Probably boosting this a bit since I've been living under a monarch for the last 15 years.

i've seen better character development in tv commercials. there's a few laughable gags.. it probably deserves a lower rating, but nostalgia of watching it as a kid and the fact that i didn't get utterly frothing infuriated with the film at any point brings it up again.

What do you think a film about John Goodman becoming King of England would be like? As predictable as this, with the expected complications, shenanigans, and a few stabs at pathos? The predictability, though, is only part of the problem. Goodman seems bored much of the time, and he's in good company: Peter O'Toole seems dispirited and John Hurt makes little out of a stock weaselly-villain role. A few decent moments suggest something more incisive was originally intended, but went well astray.

Like Mr Deeds but with posh Brits instead of posh NYers, but not as good.

I've seen this movie 4 times. Once flying to London, then flying to Moscow, then back to London, and then back home. It didn't get any better with rewatching. I admit, I like John Goodman, but this movie stinks.

I remember seeing this in the theatres and laughing throughout a decent portion of the movie. Of course, I may just think it is hysterical to blow up the Royal Family in a photo opportunity gone awry.

If you want to see a great film featuring John Goodman, watch Big Lebowski. If you want to see a good film featuring John Goodman, watch Raising Arizona. If you want to see a terrible film featuring John Goodman, watch Blues Brothers 2000. If you want to see a John Goodman movie that will make you want to shoot yourself in the head, watch King Ralph.
