Carl Panzram is sent to Leavenworth Prison for burglary. While there, he is brutally beaten by a guard. Neophyte guard Henry Lesser feels sympathy for Panzram, befriends him, and gets him to write his life story. Lesser learns that Panzram's past is much more violent than he thought, but also that he's capable of being a much better person than the rest of the prison staff believes - or so Lesser thinks. Justly forgotten. Seems to have been intended to capitalize on the success of DEAD MAN WALKING, but Prejean was actually an interesting protagonist(/person) who commands attention and curiosity; Lesser may well have been, but as conceived here and played by the capable Robert Sean Leonard he is amazingly inert. Woods is unable to pick up the slack with a silly accent (see the awful GHOSTS OF MISSISSIPPI for its final riotous form) and a script satisfied with sillier speechifyin'.

Very good performance on the side of James Woods. The rest is pretty much like all the other prison movies, nothing special about that.
